x1600 big improvement from go6600 256 mb?

i am just wondering if the x1600 is a big improvement from the go6600 256 mb, because it is another 150 $ if you already have the go6600 256 mb in your config

Yeah, if you haven't ordered yet, it's a big improvement. I'm not sure it would be worth the expense to upgrade though if you've already got a 5500 with the 6600go.

Do a google search for 'x1600 review' and you'll see benchmarks and be able to read about it.

With respect to 3DMark05 benchies - here are approximate numbers for the three video card options:

128 MB go 6600 = 2100
256 MB go 6600 = 2700
256 MB x1600 = 4000+

Disclaimer: these are relative values, assuming other specs are comparable and are what I've picked up from various reviews - so just look at them as approximate. The real key is: what impact does this have when gaming (or running other apps - assuming people do that with these computers )?

I'd go with the x1600 now that is available, but really have no complaints with the 256MB go6600. Will I go to the trouble to upgrade? Probably not, if I have to send it in. Besides I need an excuse to change out computers in the next 12 months...got my eye on a new MacBook Pro (no flaming needed - you guys know I love my Alienwares!).

Your right on with the 2100 for the 128 go6600....Thats what I got, and you dont have to send your laptop in they will just send you out the x1600 module your to install.

Thanks, Stuckup - you know, I've heard different versions of the "will they send the x1600 to you, or make you send it in?". Not sure it's consistent, and I've not called to inquire. I really can't complain about the 6600, and I have my desktop for more demanding games. In fact, I have a whole host of older games just waiting to be played on my m5500.

I just picked up a MacBook Pro last weekend and installed Boot Camp and WinXP. Its a pretty awesome system. It can't game like an Alienware but for an all around sweet machine, I think it ranks pretty high. Besides, Unix, Mac OS X and WinXP all running natively in one box? Beat that.

i don't know about anyone else, but my friend got his x1600 shipped out to him, so he installed it.

Yea once I saw the x1600 on the AW site I called and spoke to a tech he said I just pay for it and they ship out once I get it just call them up and they would walk me through it if need be.

Maybe we should wait and see how well the go 7600 perform, heck i'm even hoping Alienware come out with a 7600GT MXM II. If 05 3DMARKS pass 5000+, i'm sold.

I can't say how much better it is over the 6600. but this x1600 is outperforming the 6800go that was in my m5700 by a good margin.... Look for my full review soon.

Ive got the go6800 in my [exactly] one year old 51m-7700...would i be able to upgrade to this? i really would like a faster card.

I have the x1600 and I love it. I beleive it was completely worth the 150 more. I had the 256 6600go before and I was satisfied but not impressed. It ran most games ok but kinda sucked in Oblivion. In that game anything less then medium settings look like a different game. The game using the 1600 looks great. Closer to my 7800's in my desktop. Now when they have a 7800gt mxm2 that would be great. As far as upgrading Alienware sent me the card for 149 and I installed it myself. A friend of mine tried to get one also a few days later and they said he has to send it in. After a little arguing they started to tell him the system board for the 6600go and the one they use with the 1600 is different. Weird. Mine has been running fine for almost a month now.

How'd you get it for $150? Do you send them your old card? Please give details.

I would like to know who you guys talked to regarding them sending you out the video card?

I called their tech support today to order a spare ac adaptor and asked them about the video card, just to see what was up, and they told me that they are not seliing them as an upgrade if you already have the system. They said that they will offer that later on, but for now its only for the new systems that have'nt been made yet. I talked to one support guy named John, and his supervisor.
