M170 and battlefield 2

Thread Starter
Hi, I just received my m170. I reformatted and reinstalled MCE. However, I could not play battlefield 2 on the highest setting, the game is very choppy and laggy. (1600x1200,every video setting on high, except AA). BF2 is playable when I turned most of the setting to medium, such as dynamic shadowing, lighing, texturing flitering, geometry. I have the lastest Nvidia 7800GTX driver from Dell's driver and support website. Anyway, my system setup is:

2.0GHz P-M
60GB 7200RPM HD
1GB 533 DDR2 RAM
256MB Nvidia Gforce 7800GTX

Thank you for your help!

you need 2GB of RAM to utilize BF2's maximum settings without stuttering.
if you want to play it with highest settings you will need 2 gigs of ram. Also just in case make sure your card/cpu isn't throttling down (maximum performance in nvidia panel).

You need more memory, Bf2 runs great on my rig and you have a better video card. I forced 1920x1200 and have everything on high except aa. Get better drivers from my sig.

get drivers from his sig.

I recently got the same config as you. My first thought on bf2 had me worried that the laptop sucked. I installed an additional gig and bf2 played on max settings
post #7 of 23
also u could turn off some of the programs you probably have running in memory (turn off anything nonessential, should help at least a little).

haha, me 2 I remember watching my friends play bf2 on an x300 and he was getting smoother settings than I was. Took me a while to realize that everytime i paused the hard drive LED was lighting up. Didn't help Dell loads up the computer with useless services/programs and I had stuff running. Closing just about everything made it pretty smooth at low settings, had to get a gig of ram to really solve it though.

Plain and simple...
Max settings = 2 Gig of RAM. There is no ifs, ands or, butts.
You can debate it all you want.. and everyone can argue it all they want. It has been hashed many times already. You can reduce the amount of apps running, etc.. and you may get some improvement. You can reduce the Res, settings, etc.. and get improvement. You want all of it? 2 Gig of RAM.

When I had my 9300 i wanted it specifically to play BF2. At that time I had 512MB of RAM and was like WTF I kno i have more than the minimum to play this game. Then I looked at the FRAPS counter and didnt see any framerate drops plus my ping was low like 63. So then I was like hold up something is wrong. I peaked at the HD light and saw it constantly loading up. That caused me to purchase 1GB off the back from Newegg. After i put that 1GB in i was like whew. Things ran smoother. So then i proceeded to up the settings as a test. Again i saw the HD light going crazy. 3 weeks later i purchased 2GB and since havent seen any issues. My 9300 specs were: 1.86ghz/2GB/60GB 7,200/WUXGA/6800go 365/770. Playing BF2 at 1280x1024 med/high settings except dynamic shadows and lighting which were low to off. Now I got my m170 with 2GB and I play BF2 at 1920x1200 everything high except dynamic shadows and lighting no issues unless i join a server where my ping is over 100. So in conclusion 2GB is the answer.

you CAN get BF2 running on max everything (and smooth) with just 1GB/1.25GB

all you need to do is close all the bloatware crap most people have running in the backround (most ppl don't even notice half the stuff they have running until the check it) just be sure to close ANY non-essential (i.e. SYSTEM) app running in the background, this includes stuff like quickset and MSN messenger and object dock, etc. as well as other programs that don't even show up in the system tray (check windows task manager/Processes).

If you do all this then you WILL have enough memory to run BF2 smooth at full settings /w 1GB/1.25GB.

End of Story

Hmm oh really? Maybe true but i was unfortunate doing so with a lot of settings on high. Yea u can run the game at medium with a decent resolution but if you wanna crank the settings to high with a resolution lets say of 1600x1200, 1920x1200 u need the 2GB.

i was fine on max setting at 1440x900 with 1.25GB

As most of the people said, 2 gigs is the way to go. I just upgrade today from 1 gig and it makes all the difference in the world if you play BF2.

I am so ticked at everyone in this forum. Well not really anyone specific. I just modded my 9300 and added the 7800 GTX to it. I'm running all my BF2 settings on high and my frame rate is averaging around 30 fps. My whole life i've been stuck at 30 FPS, so I am actually debating whether I should downclock the graphics, overclock the video card, or live with 30 fps. Because I'm not buying anything else for this laptop for at least another 30 days.

I have 1.5gb and I notice hd-paging in certain areas of certain maps, so yes 2gb is the answer.

How much RAM do you have? Consider upping your RAM to at least 1.5GB or 2GB. Next do a defrag, I recommend using diskeeper 10. Next turn off dynamic lighting and dynamic shadows you will notice a huge performance increase with these two off. Lastly make sure watever server you are loggin into to play detects that your ping is under 100. Hope this helps!

yes definitely turn off the shadow crap, although realistic and nice to look at, it actually puts you at a disadvantage to other people who have shadows turned OFF. Hence, I recommend turning that crap to low or off. Yes, you should also defrag, and turn off anti-virus cause that can cause lag for some people.
