Left speaker has more bass than right on M170?

Is this just because of the subwoofer location I can hear more impact on the left speaker than the right?

I would imagine so. Turn down the sub in the windows mixer and listen to how much bass the two front speakers actually produce(Read :none) While the 1" Sub is placed slightly left from center, I've never noticed it being more noticable from the left than the right.

Could anyone try this?

Go into the volume control panel and add the sub woofer so u can control the balance, volume and mute.

Play some bassy music, and have the subwoofer on.

now slide the balancer to the left, what happens?

Now slide it all the way to the right, now what happens?

Thanks

Just tried that, with the sub off, panning left to right and vice versa. They sound the same to me.

If it bothers you, just have Dell overnight some new speakers!

Try it with the sub on.

Sorry, heh by "vice versa" I meant I tried it with the sub on and off, worded it wrong.

weird, and you're sliding the subwoofer balancer right?

I get some weird results with mine...when i slide the subwoofer balancer left the bass seems to die out, but when I go to the middle and right its normal.

Could anyone else try this, it would be appreciated. Thanks

Yeah, your right Jeri,

I slid mine to the left and the bass dissapears. Slide it to the center or right and the bass is there. Weird, never noticed that before.

Thanks for trying it out..what I think Dell did was just route the subwoofer to receive the signal from just one channel.

Very weird though, I wonder if everyone else has this problem. It seems to be with those with just XPSs though?

Yea, a bit, never really a problem though.

ok you guys here's the problem. turn over your laptop and look at the bottom where the subwoofer is located. I suppose you know where the problem is now. the subs's located on the left. so that's where the bass comes from. however, bass waves are undirectional unlike treble, so it's not gonna make a big deal. but if treble came from ony my left speaker, i'd be pissed

That wasnt raelly my problem sorry, my problem was the issue I posted abouve with the subwoofer balance slider.

I feel like an a$$! I thought you meant use the left/right slider on the normal speakers, not the sub, sorry!

I see what you are talking about now, it is strange. But also, since it is only 1 sub, it might be mono (cheaper) so it would only have 1 real channel anyway.

Bass waves are non directional when they get down below about 80Hz. Theres no way the sub(which is actually more like a tweeter/midrange speaker) can get that low so you will notice some directionality from the sub. Most people have their laptop on a flat surface(and the sub pointing down) though which would obscure the direction of sound from the sub. Just my $0.02.
