G3 performance

I can get a g3 ibook for a very low price, now. I'm just wondering if it would be powerful enough for basic word processing, itunes and safari use.

It has 512 megs of ram, and a 500 mhz g3 processor. I could also get a 700mhz g3, but this only 192 megs of ram.

Bascially, I dont plan to do any photoshopping, anytihng complex, just watch movies, listen to muc and surf the web with a bit of WP.

Is the g3 poerful enough to deal with tiger?

Pretty much. I have that configuration (check the sig) and do wireless browsing, email, iTunes, FTP, and so on.

Note that while DVD-playback is perfect, compressed video with recent codecs will not play smoothly most of the time.

Tiger will run, but it's borderline. I prefer to stick with Panther because the final Panther version allocates its resources more efficiently.

Intersting, thanks. I'll go for the more powerful one and buy more ram.

Wait, so would a ~1000kpbs divx display alright? I know my phone (with a 200mhz sometihng ) can display this alright... I hope you mean just HD/

from my experience with G3 systems....i wouldn't like to be using one for a long period of time. what price are you getting them for? i am quite sure that you can probably get a better performing P3m laptop for a similar price.

my 600mhz iBook with 384 ram lags pretty bad in powerpoint. Other than that, itunes, firefox and word all run well simultaneously.

The 700 mhz is the same price as a 700mhz p3 system off ebay, and looking round reviews it seems the g3 performs better. Though I could only find one, so I might be way off.

you can pick up an IBM T21 with a 866mhz P3 and 256mb ram for something along the lines of $350. a T23 with 1ghz P3 and 512mb ram will run you in the $500 ballpark.

using VLC, i can't see it being an issue. quicktime can be a dog even w/ the right codecs installed.

DivX isn't as processor-intensive as some other codecs, so yeah, that ought to run fine on the 700mhz, as long as the video's resolution isn't too high.

From my own experiences, G3 has always outperformed P3.

In the uk its:

700mhz laptop (a nice one, like an ibm) p3- 350
700mhz ibook- 325.

....well...depends.

the G3 iMacs in school are quite laggy when it comes to having safari and office open side by side and having itunes in the background. then again it might be the ram since they probably have 256mb.

my thinkpad has a 1.133 P3 with 1gb ram and i can have office, firefox, and winamp open all at the same time and its pretty smooth sailing.
