My v6v? tips

Many v6v owners are probably aware of the heat issues on the right palmrest. The slender dimensions & brushed aluminium (conducts heat) becomes fairly warm at times. I thought I do something about it... Since the hard disk is located underneath thie right palmrest. I decided to place card(s) between the harddisk and the palmrest.

Sorry for the very average images but its taken from my Sony Ericsson w800i camera phone.

Disclaimer: PLEASE NOTE DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I HOLD NO REPONSIBILTY... OK BORING STUFF OVER.

1. Unscrew the hard disk compartment.

2. Remove harddrive.

I used a couple of Royal Mail Recorded slips since they fit perfectly. You can use any card and cut them to size. I have used two Royal Mail Recorded slips since the card is quite thin.

3. Place card(s) as shown.

4. replace harddrive and cover.

After this procedure I noticed a definite improvement to the right palm rest even though there is still some heat but its a lot better than before. Some of the heat still rises from the cpu/gpu/memory compartment which can be felt just below the arrrow keys section.

I also removed the restrictive filters from the cover for the cpu/gpu/memory compartment to help with cooling. Look at the 2nd picture below and you'll notice the filters has been peeled off and cleaned from the vent holes.

The 2nd procedure helped to reduce cpu idle temps by 1-2c which isn't much but every little helps. This may be a lot more when stressed. I'm sure it helps GPU temps too but don't have anything to measure before and after. The only minor drawback to this you may require to clean your hsf more often than before where you'll probably get away with just cleaning the filters. The choice is yours...

Interesting

I own a v6vsa customized and yes, the right palmrest gets a little warm (I have a 7200 rpm drive in there), but even after an hour of playing FARCRY or LOTR II I don't find it hot enough to warrant a mod.

Maybe there is an issue with your drive?? WHat speed is it anyway?

Yes it is a little warm but I thought it was a very simple mod to do and although it wasn't a big issue I thought why not. I could always easily remove the card if needed for repair (warranty). Maybe my description about the problem sounded a lot worse than what it actually was.

Its a 7200rpm drive. See my sig...

There is not a problem with the drive as it shows average of 40c for a 7200rpm drive which is normal I would say.

I see it as an improvement not a problem.
