1680x1050 straining your eyes??? You can´t do anything! If you change to lower Pixelrate the picture can´t become better! The screen-setting 1680x1050 is nearly the best from this model!
I can only tell you that working at a normal Monitor with 1024x768 this straining the eyes! You can only work for one hour in front of it! I can work hours for hours in front of the Ferrari and I have no Problem! OK I have another solution: Do you have an old monitor? Yes? Than put the cable in the notebook an work with another monitor! Other ideas I haven´t got!

PS.: default ist 1680x1050; 60Hz

Ah I see! I had the same Problem, but only when I did special things like:
1.New Windows-Installation; doesn´t matter if Windows XP or XP x64
2.Change the graphic-card driver (install new one)

But the text was only small after the first boot when doing this. If I booted twice the text getting normal, without change the setting! The text where you can write your personal password down before windows is starting is small too? Yes? Then I had that same thing, but as I told you after second boot it was normal! I have Tuneup Utilities 2006; there you have Tuneup style 2! I can tell you that the distance between the Desktopsymbols is 111x62

Do you have the "normal" ATI driver on it? Go to settings; than ATI-Display-settings, than klick on the card "gerneral-setting" (hope the translation from german to english was right! ) you see DPI-Settings? This one is set to 120 DPI! Is it not, then try to set to 120 and than make an restart! If the problem is again I´ve no idea! Sorry! Can you post an screenshot please? I want to see how your screen looks!

1600x1050 is your screen native resolution and it is the only resolution that you can use if you want to get good picture quality. That's how LCD technology works. If text is too small for you with 96dpi interface size, you can try to change it to 120dpi (125%) or set custom dpi, but you should know, that icons quality (especially small icons) is going to be worse. Windows icons are bitmap based so far and you can't change their resolution without quality losses. Fully scalable vector icons and other interface elements are expected in Vista.

Go to your display properties, appearance, and change the font size. You can also increase font size in IE, Firefox, etc. There's nothing much you can do but get better eyes perhaps.
