Melted Motherboard :-(

My 9860, which I have had for one year and one month, officially crapped itself last night. Part of the motherboard beneath the heat sink literally melted, after catching fire.

I am looking for advice on what to do here. Is it possible to obtain a new motherboard? I think that is probably the fastest route to recovery, if it is viable -- I do not know if these motherboards are widely available.

Thanks for any and all advice...

Richard

Must be a rash of this lately,

I used it as an excuse to upgrade to the newest MB and video card. Sent it in last Monday and it's due back Monday. It does bother me that this seems to be a persistent problem that Clevo should be looking into.

How do I initiate the replacement process through them? What is the cost of this? I GREATLY appreciate your input and feedback!

What I did was to fill out a callback request on the Sager website. I requested they call me ASAP Monday morning so that I could get it sent out that day. I got a call about 10:30 in the morning (central) and got an RMA # to authorize the return.

I taped a letter on the computer explaning that if the repair required the replacement of he MB then to just do the upgrade. The upgrade is $895 + shipping.

Even though I included a credit card to charge, they did send a seperate form before they returned dthe unit that was a crediut card authorization.

I sent the unit overnight on Monday, they sent me a notice that they received it Tuesday, called me on Wednesday to tell me they would upgrade it and shipped it back out on Friday.

I know that spending an additional $895 could be viewed as expensive but I figured an out-of-warranty replacement of the motherboard would have been a few hundred dollars anyway, so while the machine was going back I might as well just upgrade it and get the new MB/Video crad warranty.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

This gives new meaning to the phrase "blazing performance".

If it's just a mobo replacement, Sager will prolly only charge you $200. But it sounds like the CPU is hosed too, which is gonna cost a few hundred more to replace. And it could be that other stuff was damaged too. You're going to have to RMA it like MagNeo said.

The CPU is fine. The only part which burned is a very small part of the motherboard under the heat sink. The burn marks and melted components measure less than one inch in diameter.

Thanks for the input, guys! Looks like I could get away from this for less than I thought I will fill out that form and hope to hear from them tomorrow

Cheers,
richard

Also...in terms of RAM upgrades (i have 1GB and want 2 or more), should I be having them do that when I send it back, or doing it myself? I'm fairly adept with upgrading computers, although not usually laptops. I don't have a clue what series or type of RAM I should be using.

Then take some advice from me, as I am now sitting with a very expensive paperweight: shut that sucker down right now, remove all the panels on the bottom, and use an entire can of compressed air cleaning it out!!! Then work on a solution to cool it better, such as supports or otherwise. I am now considering drilling some holes in my cheap computer desk to create more airflow when I get the laptop back.

If you don't pay attention to the issue....be prepared for what I am dealing with now! These suckers get H-O-T! As the saying goes, "the best time to repair a roof is while the sun shines"...

way ahead of you on that! i go mr. clean on this suckers ass every month!
that laptop cooler for 30 bucks sounds kinda cheap right about now!

All the info you'll need for doing this yourself is in your users manual. However, it might be worth it to have them do it and test the system with the new RAM after they replace the mobo (just to make sure it all works before they ship it back to you). Oh, and FYI, if I were you I'd send the power adapter in too and ask them to test it with your power adapter.

I was wondering, does anyone know the part number for this motherboard? I work in a small service center and the guy that owns this laptop is leaving for Iraq in less than a week (sending to sager is not an option), and I can't find a p/n anywhere! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

consumer protection and safety comission. if they force a recall, that would mean free upgrades

Where do we sign up? I think we have more than enough to petition a recall...

we should get a list of failed 9860 through the forums just for research purposes.
