Melted Motherboard :-( - Page 2

Sager 9860

I ready your posts and decided to join this forum. I had a Sager 9860 as well and about 3 months after the 1 year warranty expired I had mine burn up. Prior to that the battery charger always thought it was pulling AC power. I had to eat the repair bill. It rain me about $930 with shipping and they changed the board out to a 9890 board with Geforce Go 7900 512MB. I had the ati x800. To be honest Im not so happy with it after I got it back. When I first got it it had 3 pixels always on.. I got passed that because it ran great.. well now I dont think it runs so great, WoW, Far Cry, Half Life all have some video stuttering. UT2004 runs great maxed but I dont think Im pushing it. 3dmark 2005 would lockup on the CPU tests however when I set Affinity to 1 it would pass just fine 3dmark 2006 runs fine and Prime 95 two sessions of it full load ran it for about 9 hours with no issues. So its hard to isolate any problem.

Anyway I saw the forum and you guys talking about motherboards I wanted to report mine burning up as well.

These Sagers SUCK!

this thread seems up my alley,
Had my sager for about 1yr + 9months .. and all has been excellent so far. Until today that is.

It was ok in the morning, travelled into town to the office and turned it on only to have it shut down after about a min (after which the fans turn on high while it's off...). I wait for it to cool, but still after 15 min I turn it on and it will just click off at different points on the boot process (either after windows runs, or just before windows begins load).. always with the fans blaring afterwards.

I assume this is a heat issue, but want to throw this out there to see if you've experienced similar problems in the current heat wave. And if you have (and ultimately had your mobo burn out), I want to be prepared.

good luck to us all,

My Notebook has actually always been in an airconditioned environment and kept very cool so outside temps shouldnt have caused mine to burn up any.

Its amazing how many different issues everyone has with this SAGER. Maybe someday someone will make a more dependable Portable Gaming Notebook. Until then these forums will have to get us through.

Im thinkin maybe a heat issue on yours also with fans being on full load. Although the odd part is why would it just all of a sudden be a heat issue with fans on full blast? Silver Thermal Compound doesnt leak off the chip. You could double check heat sink is on tight removing bottom of case the long strip where the CPU is. It has copper tubing and heat sink around it. Press on the chip make sure CPU is properly in slot. You can press lightly on heat sink. Then there are 4 screws you can make sure are tight enough. Dont overtighten but just check them out.

Other then that Ive seem the actual thermal senser be broken or BIOS chip go bad where it causes odd things like that to happen. Reporting the wrong temp when everything is OK. To be honest our BIOS on SAGER has limited options to change stuff.

Let us know what you find out. Im finding out last few weeks its good to share for others who are searching.

thanks Ryu..

Called this in to Sager, though they were friendly they didn't offer much help other than, "send it in". I can't afford that right now because it's my work computer...

Anyway, the pattern seems to be I turn it on, it boots fine, get into windows and the temp is reading as 1 degree (which means fans aren't going automatically if temp gets too high). So I use getThermal to force the fans to run for a bit.. 5 minutes later the temp starts to read normally (jumps from 1degree, to 50 degrees...), and I can turn off getThermal.

Not a good way to have to run, but it IS running. You all know any good 'diagnostics' programs I could run, to check my graphics card/ bios chip/ mobo? (I have one for ram).

*another note, I flashed bios last night w/ new 1.04 versions - but still no luck.

you try setting the fans on continous in the bios? you tried the Fn + F2 key right?

F.Y.I. clean your heatsink! I found a dust ball in there, looked like a filter!
while i was in there i lapped my cpu and gpu heatsink and added artic silver 5. it wasn't too difficult. i found a guide in this forum somewhere awhile ago. like all of you guys my warranty ran out, so i am doing what ever i can to keep this thing cool.

i've been using getTHermal now to force my fans to run .. it's a problem with reading the temp (reads as 1degree). All my fans are running oddly.. just now my video card is showing 85 idle (i think its fan may be off.. but i have it at 100% here... ). I'm just holding out for the month, after which I'll mail it back to sager for doctoring.

Anyone know where to buy a replacement motherboard?
I've had my motherboard on my 9860 replaced 2x already. My theory is that "hearing between the lines" on what Sager said, the replacement by Sager with the latest revision Clevo (a 9890 motherboard) means that all the kinks got worked out of problems inherent in the 9890.

I will let you know in another year <grin>

I had a melted motherboard. Then got it back worked ok for a little while... less then week, had game issues, lockups thought BIOS solved it. sound causing stuttering then last thing was graphic corruption. Again I have to eat the non refunded shipping cost and send back to SAGER again. I tried to fix it myself thiking if I replaced he thermal tap with artctic silver 5 but I think after I had graphic corruption it was mute point and already ruined.

When I get mine back again Im going to sell it unless Sager refunds the repair and gives me some money for the parts. I think for $1500.. sad have 4300 in it plus with shipping costs probably 4500 and Im taking a 3k loss.. just tired of messing with it.

Chatting on a replacmentHP notebook I bought for $1300 gonna use it now. Screen isnt as nice and its slower and has less options.. but its cheap and bought it local =).

hey ryu so the thing dont work anymore?
if you cant sell it you going to part it out?
If they dont give me a decent refund Im going to try and get them to fix it again then sell it right away I think for about $1500 only issue with it is 3 pixels been there since I first bought it are always on 2 are always on red one blue. Minor issue as nice as the screens are on those things my HP had problems with being to bright on 1/2 the screen. Im just tired of putting money in it so probably unload it if its fixed or as parts. Why are you needing a part?

I feel your pain. I have not surfed this forum in a while but just this past weekend my 9860 locked up. So I did all I could do, hold the power button until it shut down. Guess what..... the computer powered down but the screen was still lit up. I had to pull the battery to get it to shut off.... this was the last time it fired up. So I was forced to buy a another lappy. My 9860 was 1 year and 2 months old

OMG... I just sent in my NP9860 because the motherboard portion right behind where the A/C adapter attaches to the laptop burnt out as well. A few nights ago, I noticed smoke coming from the back part of the laptop right under the screen. Something obviously was wrong because I can smell someting burning. I turned off the machine successfully, and restarted about 30 minutes later. After about 10 minutes, the smell came back and all of sudden lost power to the laptop. I broke apart one of the panels in the back, and found a particular chip on the motherboard burnt out.

Warrantech sent me packaging to send it out for fixing. I've had it for almost 2 yrs now, I hope it comes back new and improved. Too bad it looks like a general defect with the product :9

not really, just incase. from the way things are going with the 9860 models, it wouldn't be a bad idea to purchase a few spare parts. sorry if i sound i am preying on other peoples misfortunes.

Cpsc

I wonder what Sager's reaction would be if the Consumer Product Safety Commission (cpsc.gov) investigated these as a fire hazards and/or risk of electrical shock? It takes quite a bit of heat to melt a circuit board, and having one smoking definitely indicates something hot enough to catch on fire. If the CPSC forced a recall, everyone that paid to upgrade or paid for a new MOBO might receive a refund. Some people leave their computers running 24/7, so if this is a defect, Sager and/or Clevo could be liable for a lot of damage should one burn down a house. Considering that this is a known issue, how could they deny responsibility?
wouldn't it take alot of incidents?

It may take only one, but certainly the more people that report the incidents, the quicker they will investigate the problem. I know that you can file a report online at their website, though I am not sure how much information they require.

At a minimum they will need to know dates, how you found the problem, what response you received from Sager, if you have knowledge of other similar incidents, if anyone received injuries, if any other property received damage, and some other information along those lines.
Dunno if this thread is dead but there are tons of people on these forums with the same problem. My sager started smoking today and same part of the mobo is burned as described by numerous others...
and the list gets longer.
just out of curiosity, did you ever clean rthe insides?
Ironically, i cleaned it two days before it happened and did so at least once a month eversince the purchase. I wrote sager but, as expected, they deny any knowledge of a production defect! If we don't come to terms with Sager i will definetely inform the CPSC and have the notebook analyzed before i RMA it.

To everyone at PcTorque, please do not take this as a personal matter. This is my 2nd and hopefully not last Sager. I simply feel ripped off for having to pay $480, possibly on a regular basis just to keep a $3000 notebook running!!!

Will keep you posted
