7800go & X1400 & possibly 7900 will not fit 9300 without serious modding.

Since I currently have a e1705 & 9300 I thought I'd try to fit the X1400 into the 9300 chassis. I had to desolder another binding post (much tougher to remove vs. e1705 post. Excitedly I tried to place the x1400 in, the connector snapped in and then I noticed a serious problem, here:

I couldn't even power it on as this is the connector that connects the status LEDS and the power switch on the 9300. You would probably have to remove the connector and then solder the (LONG/how else would you remove the cover in the future) wires directly into the motherboard. I know this is the X1400, but the 7800go has the same size PCB and I'm guessing the 7900/GTX would also.

that sucks donkey testicles. is there any way to solder the wires only to the connecter? by wires only i mean like the actual leads, with the connected taken off. please dont dont do this and blame me if you fark up. it is merely a suggestion.

I was thinking about it, but since this laptop is now going to my dad I don't feel like rolling the dice doing the mod. You're going to have to remove the connector and then solder directly as if you try to solder the wires while the connector is there you're going to cause a short circuit with your uber expensive video card above. Funny how you could put a x300/6800go/6800ultra/7800gtx in the e1705, but not the other way around.

Dear Sir,

I am very thankful for your use of the phrase "donkey testicles" and believe it is more than worthy of a hand shake. You see, the male reproductive organs are very humourous in nature. Of all testicle bearing creatures, the donkey is in the top 5 funniest.

Sincerely,
W

Are there any connections running through the board of that card right above the connector? If not, is it safe to cut it back some to make room?

well...u know what guys....its better to just stick aorund with the 9300's till another yr or 2. Then when the vista laptops with 1 gig Vid cards come out....we can get our share of fun. .. I mean...the regular 9300 is still flawless with 1152 or even 1600 res on current games like tomb raider. Only at 1920 res.. it starts slowdown when AA is turned on.and this is only with default dell clocks....overclock and lol! take it a little further.

meh....just my 2 cents.

6800 is considered to be a midrange video card now. did you try to run tomb raider with next gen on, the result is . more and more games will require you to sacrify visuals for framerates.

So all I can say is go upgrade every 6 months or so. As long as your brain and your wallet is in agreement that's the BEST way to go

Every 6 months might be a bit extreme for most of us? I waited 3 years from my 8100 to my 9300, but only 4 months to the XPS M170. BUT, I plan on selling the 9300 to pay for most of the XPS M170. The 8100 was built really well and just won't die. The two batteries I have for it STILL work well. Gotta love Dell.

meh, soldering that isnt a problem. even someone with no experience could solder that after a few hours of practice on some dead stuff

i still think the 6800 is still a good card ony 2 games that have little trouble is Oblivion and Tomb Raider Legend but they more than playble

sence i upgrade 2gb from 512mb of ram every went super smooth right now im playing auto assault at 1920x1200 with everything max out and its 20 too 25frames lowest and 30s and 40s avg and still plays smooth when it goes too 20fps.

but im planing too keep this 9300 too about 2years or even maybee 3years because i will be upgradeing the cpu and video soon a later but this 6800 is still doing me fine

and all i use this laptop for is pure games

lol! The only thing I am worried about modding my laptop is messing up...lol! I guess I am too much of a wuss...to play around inside my 2000$ laptop. .

But as I said....give the market 3 yrs....limp the 9300 till then...I am pretty sure for the games that come out then...we can play them AA disabled and at 1024 res ....lol...at playable framerates. This is better than wasting a regular 300$ every month....risking laptop damage...etc....

Once the vista laptops with DX 10, HDR AA enabled, 1 gig vid RAM laptops come out at a weight of 8 lbs or less...thats when we should consider getting a new laptop.
