Power Adapter for Inspiron E1705

My E1705 came with a 90W power adapter. I have a spare power adapter I bought for my Latitude D600, which I recall giving me the choice when I bought between a 90W and 65W power adapter. Does anybody know if I can safely use my lower power old power adapter on my new E1705?

Hey manekineko,
My 9400 came with a 90Watt (19.5Volts) power adapter as well. Using a 65Watt (??Volts) to run the computer may cause problems with a 9400, It has a power hungry GPU and could require more juice then the adapter can provide. But if the output voltage, and adapter polarity are OK, it could serve as a low cycle battery charger when the computer was not in use.

I tested a 65w in my e1705 and it worked fine. However, it gave my a post about future problems. You might get some errors in the future because the e1705 is very power hungry with the dedicated cards. Maybe it would work perfectly with the integrated card.

Okay, so I tried it out and I got this message on bootup:

Quote:
WARNING: A 65W AC Power Adapter has been detected, preventing optimal system performance.

Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see warning messages again.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility.
However, as far as I can tell system performance is optimal, I have no idea what is unoptimal about it, and no idea what to look for?

I'm not looking for any guarantees obviously, but seeing as everything seems to be working fine, do you guys think there's anything I should be worrying about? I feel especially okay about it from a warranty perspective since Dell went so far as detecting the 65W power adapter, but they don't warn at all of any possibility of future damage, only of optimal system performance.

For what it's worth, I do have the built-in Intel video card.

Let it go a while and then feel the power adapter. It will get super hot and can eventually turn off from thermal conditions. If you're only using it to charge the laptop when off, that should be okay.

Turns out if I plug in a 65w adapter while the computer is running, it'll warn me that my computer will run slower, and the battery will take longer to charge. Whenever on the 65w adapter I now notice that the computer is locked at its lowest speedstep. Other than that it seems to operate normally.

I don't notice the power adapter getting particularly hot, a bit warm at most, maybe this difference is on account of the fact that I use onboard video?

Oh, that could easily be. I have the 7800Go which makes a HUGE difference in how much power the laptop requires.

i plugged the 150w power adapter from my old I9100 in the e1705 and worked just fine and even bios recognized the wattage. I also plugged the 90w in the 9100 and it worked fine but it gave me a message that basically said that the battery will not charge at all with a 90w psu. Nevertheless knowing that the 150w psu would get burning hot while gaming on the 9100 i would not do the swapping for a lesser PSU for more than just an experiment to see if it works. you can also turn off adapter warnings in bios and don't use quickset and you might get away with the core/PM systems.
