m170 sound good? or worth it to buy audigy2zs? - Page 2

So if you buy an Audigy you *have* to buy external 5.1 speakers, otherwise theres no benefit, right?

Eh, the quality in the sound if you have a solid headset is extremely noticable.

I have a set of Sennheiser HD280's and the difference between stock and my Audigy is astounding.

A couple of misconceptions:

The only real MAJOR benefit with the Audigy2 ZS is that it allows true 5.1 surround
Wrong, there's the definite improvement is sound quality over headphones (can you spell EAX?) and the reduced CPU usage (i.e. more calculating power left for games).

Infrared you can't see, this light you can, ergo -> no infrared.

(sorry for being bitchy... had a big fight with the wife...)

EAX is in Wow - that is environmental sound augmentation

CMSS 3D is a 2 speaker and headphone simulation of 3D and it works pretty
well. That you will notice with just headphones in games - as directional sounds coming from around your character.

Directsound is accelerated under Audigy. The onboard sound does not accelerate directsound. Drops a fair rate off the FPS.
Here is an article on a similar soundchip that gives an idea of the performance difference: http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2681&p=12

Food for thought.

Argh but there is no imporvement if you were just to buy an audigy, and use the onboard speakers... i mean, headphones double the price of the investment, right?

True. While there is a way to get it to feed to the onboard speakers the comments on that seemed to be that there was a lag on the sound that was annoying in games. I'll have to defer more comments on that to those who've done it, sorry.

I'll make you a great deal on one! PM me if interested. I just sold my XPS so I got the extra Audigy2ZS left over.

So how's it look, would anyone say the audigy is worth it without getting extra headphones/speakers?
