Ive been researching for a Tablet PC or SM. Laptop for weeks now trying to decide on which one I want to buy to get me through my Senior year of High School and my College years and Ive decided if I get a Tablet PC I can have the best of both worlds. It will mainly be used for listening to music, watching dvds, surfing the internet, and word processing. Earlier today I decided that Im going to go with the Fujitsu LifeBook P1500D Notebook. I went to the site and I customized it alittle and heres what Ive come up with:

  • Additional Main Battery Option High-capacity main Lithium ion battery (6-cell 5200 mAh)

  • Port Replicator
  • External DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive

$2742.00

Is that US dollars?, Or play money? Your money, Money YOU earned, or are your parents going to buy this for you?

$2742.00 is alot of money for someone your age to blow on something that won't be worth $50 3 years from now.

On your needs....

Watching dvds on a 8.9 screen? Surfing the net on a 8.9 screen? Word processing? Spreadsheets? Term papers?... On 8.9 inches?

For $2742.00 ????

Keep in mind your "needs" are going to change.
I can bet you you're going to need something with more "horsepower" and the wow factor will fade as time goes on...

Man, take some advice.... buy a regular laptop that you can get for 1/5 the price and invest/save the rest of the money.

Give what you would have spent to charity, help someone down on their luck. Donate to one of the animal shelters...

One last thing... due to the small size.... You are planning on buying THEFT insurance, right?

Due the the small size and weight it would be VERY easy to steal.... compared to a notebook....

You need to be aware that it's going to be a target for thieves big time due to the fact it is so small. You could have it on the table right in front of you.... and I bet I could steal it pretty easily if I wanted. It would just take you looking away for about 2 seconds and someone could snatch it up and pocket it and you wouldn't know who had it and they'd be gone....

PS: I'm all fo the latest and greatest, but at that price you need to be making 100 grand a year. I could see something like that for business use, to match the Lear Jet you fly from city to city...

But carrying something that expensive around school? How long do you think it will last before it gets stolen?

Ok. Well yes it is US dollars, real money too, the money I worked for and my parnets paid for some of. Oh and thats all I would need it for throughout my college years. Also Im not worried about someone stealing it, I have my reasons. Anyways even if I wasnt going to spend that much why the hell would I donate my money? That just wouldnt be happening. Also I need a tablet pc so I can take notes for when we talk about match and use charts. Thanks for the help though. And rember I wanted something small watching dvds writing and surfing on 8.9" dosent bother me. Also when I have todo serious projects I will probably get my parents to get me a desktop or something do I could hook it up their. But I need something that can be with me 24/7. Thanks

Maybe an external monitor to go with it?

That's the thing about current generation ultra-portables that puts me off: most of them do not have DVI yet.

If you could alternate between the portable's tiny screen, and a decent-sized monitor/television with high resolution connected thru DVI, then you'd have the best of both worlds.

I understand the point of wanting something ultra portable.

On the other points I brought up, Lets talk in twenty years when you been in the game of life longer so you can better relate.

Best of luck to you.

Well, I have both the biggest Fujitsu as well as probably the smallest, I can say ultraportable are not for daily use, I use my P7010 only for notetaking, coffee shop internet... and my 17" does all the work

Personally I think it looks pretty funky.

The keys look a tad small, however, so not ideal for typing up dissertations (unless the pen allows you to quickly type on-screen using a graphical qwerty kbd template or similar? fiddly...)

The processor is a 1.2GHz PentiumM?

Also, I can't help but think some aspects may not ideally suit the intended function. Nice for note-taking in class, of course, but what else? You are paying a massive premium - and bearing a massive compromise (in tech specs) - purely for the miniturisation, so you have to be sure that's exactly what you need. If it really is, then go for it. If you have any niggling doubts, have a re-think.
If you're spending that amount of wonga, howabout the prospect of getting a PDA for note-taking duties and also a superb standard laptop for the rest?

All food for thought, anyhow. Good luck!

For that price, you can buy yourself a nice P7120 + a desktop or another Dell Core Duo notebook. P7120 is around 1500 something so it will be good for note taking, another 1000 for a dell, that sounds about right.

The price is the thing. I agree it is overpriced, and I agree that it is a little too small (not just because of the keys).

What I'd like to see is a low-end version of that model, slightly bigger and cheaper build quality. But still with the swivel screen and touch screen. If you're going to use it for basic tasks while on the go, a 1.2GHz Pentium M is fine IMO, even a 1.0 Ghz would suffice.

Some good posts above.

I'm posting back in this thread because someone gave me a negative "rep" for the above comments I made. Date was around 4-18 so I'd assume it was the OP. Gave me a negative, comments being "awful, just awful."

Point I was trying to make is that is allot of money, it's small and easily STOLEN... that your "needs" are going to change.. and that you can buy about 4-5 smaller type notebooks... or buy a nice laptop with a decent size screen with a fast cpu and a PDA type device to carry with you for allot cheaper than the price the OP posted.

In my posts from April, I mentioned the aspect of getting it stolen, the Op saying he's not worried about that.... Well with the small size it wouldn't take too much effort for someone to cause a distraction for a second or two.. the OP looking away briefly.... then looking back to see the thing is gone.

I don't know why people worry so much for having laptops stolen. For example, if you go to class, your laptop is always there, when you get off, you take it with you. And if you go to coffee shop, take it with you when you have to go to restroom. Same thing to eating out, laptops aren't safe when it's in car, or even in the trunk, so I take it with me even I walk into a restaurant, my laptop carrying case is some designer case anyway so it doesn't look bulky or anything. I don't know if I am a very cautious person but I do not give a chance to have my laptop being away from my reachable distance lol.

And for that reason, ultraportable is good to have as you will have to bring it around.

I think Techno-Elf has nothing to worry about it being stolen; however, this thing is indeed expensive for what it is. Swivel screen, touch screen + a slow PM 1.2 ULV = 2500?.. Dell just came out its Core Duo 12.1" wxga laptop, you should consider it.

You list all the reasons someone would be worried about getting a laptop stolen.

For allot of people it is impratical to carry the laptop into the bathroom for example... and sometimes you are forced to leave it in the car, etc.

The point I was trying to make is due to the SMALL size of the unit and HIGH dollar value of the unit is that something like that is at a high risk for being a target for being stolen. That the unit due to it's small size could be stolen VERY easily.

Was also trying to make the point that for the money the spec's aren't that great, etc

Regardless my comments and suggestions didn't warrant a neg rep. My perspective is from someone who has been around a while. $2,742 is allot of money to drop on something like that.

yep, 2,742 is a lot for something like that. I wonder did Techno-Elf really buy this laptop or something else..

No he didn't... He's talking MacBooks now.

Everyone here just wasted their time... in his new thread he's looking at a laptop on Ebay for $250 in which the auction ends today..... So maybe he thought about what I said. (doubt it)

http://www.notebookforums.com/thread169973.html

EDIT: I see he's planning on using the Ebay laptop till he graduates, then mommy and daddy are going to buy him a MacBook. So everyone in this thread just got jerked around, wasted their time.

PS: Be careful about what you say when you're trying to help Techno-Elf out... if you say something he's doesn't want to heard you probally see some negative reps coming your way.

Don't worry about it WeAreNA, I once got a blank negative rep for this post (see link) which kinda baffled me, lol:-

Anyway, positive rep coming your way.
