Inspiron B130 Memory Question...

Thread Starter
I just ordered the wife a B130 for surfing ect. as the price was right with the 15.4" screen... Now to my question... I am wondering... Dell states that the maximum amount of memory is 1gb for this lappy, but it's the same chipset (915GM) as my i6000D, so I know that the chipset will support 2gb (Now the BIOS maybe another matter...). They also stated that there are two DIMMs, in the original configuration (hence 2 slots), but only one is user accessable, from looking at the knowledge base...
My 2650 was this way (one DIMM slot was under the keyboard) but I DID upgrade both DIMMS without a hitch... So has anyone tried 2gb of memory in this lappy??? If not, I will as soon as it arrives and post my results here... BTW I'm gonna slap a pin modded 735 in it too, and will post those results as well, if anyone is interested...

Got One

I have a Inspiron 1300 rec'd just before Xmas. It has the 910GML chipset that limits it to the 400 MHz FSB but it has a 533 pentium M and memory - go figure. There's lots of threads on this here and other forums - just google 533 vs 400.

Here's the DELL Canada link for the 1300/B139/B120 manuals - it has both the owners manual (the tech specs are at the Appendix) and the service manual :

http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...0/en/index.htm

Don't trust all of it as it states that the laptop can have either the 910GML or 915GM chipset - wrong! Just the 910. It also states that the memory can be up to two x 1 GB sodimms. The service manual has pics showing the two slots. If your wife plans to use it for general stuff and nuthin intensive then two x 512 MB should be plenty - the ultimate choice is yours.

Of course, this assumes that nuthin has changed. But as we all know, assume can also spell "ass" out of "u" and "me". Dell seems to change stuff a bunch.

You might want to consider a larger hard drive - mine's only 40GB.

PS Luv my 1300

Thanks for that info... As I don't have one "in hand", it's very helpful, as now I know what to "expect"... I have already come to the conclusion that 2GB is not possible (as I looked @ 1300 layout) but I did not know about the limit to the FSB...

Lappy finally arrived...

First off let me say that for a "basic" laptop this thing is sweet... The plastic is a bit "flimsy", but if well taken care of it should last for years... I must say that the above poster was correct about the chipset (it's a 915GM/910GML)...
The first order of business was to swap out the Celeron M processor with a Centrino 735... I have not tried the "pin mod" yet, but I must say that changing the cpu was the easiest, of any lappy I have seen... There is a access panel on the bottom of the lappy... Open it, remove the heatsink, unscrew the ziff screw and bam... It took longer to apply AS5 than it did to remove and replace the cpu and heatsink!!!
The next order was to find out the maximun amount of supported memory as orignally posted in this thread... Again I'm happy to report that this lappy DOES support 2GB of ram, unlike the 1GB stated from Dell... Again the DIMM slots are easily accessible through a panel on the bottom... The slots are "staggered" and as such one DIMM covers the other one, but both are easy to remove and replace... So for anyone out there on a budget this lappy is perfect as you can always do your upgrades at a later time (CPU, and memory) and for general computing your not going to find a better deal IMHO...

Thank you very much, got one coming and will do the cpu mod. Glad to know this is nice for a basic notebook.

YW... They're sweet...

but watch out for dells deceptive practice of falsely stating the specs. you only get 8mb of memory in it instead of the user defineable that they state

so its possible to pin mod the B130!

Yes it is... And not only is it possible, but getting to the CPU and socket is far easier, than any lappy I have seen...

What is your FSB on the CPU??? As the pin mod only works with the 400 FSB Cpu's and the 1.6's are the best bet for it working... I just got lucky with the 1.7, as some will mod and some won't...

its the stock 1.7 @ 400mhz poped in the jumper and it the light would turn on then off right away, i also tried a 1.8 i had, same problem

I finally got it to work, thanks for the help

I can´t get mine to pin mod. =( it is a latitude 120L, the brazilian version of the inspiron 130b, they are the same.

When I pin mod it with a 1.8ghz (fsb 100) cpu it just don´t change the fsb! It boot, etc, but just ignores the pin mod... How did you get yours to work?

Please, help me.

Thnx. =(

From what I have gathered the 1.6Ghz is the best bet for the pin mod to work... With the 1.7GHz a close second (and even these are hit or miss), but after that the 1.8GHz and above only a few work... Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

No man! It wasn´t just unable to overclock, the pin mod didn´t work at all! Even the overvolts didn´t work. I have no idea why did it happen... wanna overclock my note... no one had the same problem? It seems that I am REALLY unlucky...

Someone help me!!
