Is there a way to block people from pinging my ip addy? Is there a way i can hide my IP addy (safely with no program)?

Just want to be more safe with where im going and what im doing on the net.

If anyone can explain to me about these questions and answer them that would be awesome

also, i used this
http://scan.sygatetech.com/quickscan.html

it said port 21 (ftp) is open, how can i close it?

Are you connecting directly to the internet or are you using some kind of router/firewall/nat box?

cause there are programs anyone could get (who uses p2p networking programs anyway) that can get my ip addy, and it isnt to hard to use an ip addy and get into someones network correct?

im hooked up via modem-wifi router, but i use cat5 connect

does your router have a feature where you can only allow connections based on a mac address? there are a bunch of other things you could do first before figuring out how to block your ip address if you're worried about security. good router software should help you out with some of this. what router are you using?

and that tor program is kinda like "dont give your traffic info away to spammers and data monitoring services, just give it... to us.... (muahahahaha)"

Hiding your IP address is pretty much nonsensical. Every computer has an IP address that the Internet uses to deliver data to it; if your IP address is "hidden", how will anyone know where to send packets?

The equivalent would be sending something in the postal mail like this:

"Dear IRS: I would like to order a copy of Form 1040. However, since I value my privacy, I'm not going to tell you my address."

Because of that, it's impossible to hide your IP address from computers you're communicating with, unless you use a program like Tor, where the equivalent is:

"Dear Bob: Can you order a 1040 from the IRS for me? I don't want to give them my address, so I'll give you mine, and you give them yours so they can send it back to you."

Find an anonymous proxy server. Though you'll have a hard time finding a fully featured, free anonymous server.

how would i go about doing that?

also, i did this test......http://scan.sygatetech.com/

it shows a lot of UDP ports open, says that they got information in.....so wondering if thats bad or good or can i close them?

i used the DMZ settings and turned all ports on........just so i dont have to worry about it

im a complete networking noob.........

Your public IP will be seen one way or, by those who want it. But if you're behind a router, that's as far as they can go with it unless they find out your LAN IP address. That's why routers are all by their nature hardware firewalls.
