Hah, no modem in the macbook that I know of. I love the thing but if I were to gripe about something (other than the heat) it would be the sensitivity of the cd-rom. CD's with tiny scratches that would still burn easily on my desktop (winxp) hang itunes and won't eject sometimes which requires me to put it to sleep, let the cd-rom stop spinning, then get out of sleep and eject the cd rom. Other than that the thing is beautiful, fast, and has been a cake to pick up the operating system. I wouldn't have bought it w/o the student discount, but with the student discount on the laptop AND the 3 year warranty (you get 32% off the 3 year warranty if yo uare a student) it was way worth it.

I know it's alot to ask, but could you install windows and then benchmark it with 3dmark05? If you could OC the gpu that would be nice, too.

I am getting windows xp sp2 today. I guess that is needed for bootcamp. I have service pack 1 xp cd, but I don't know how to slipstream it so my friend is hooking me up with it tonight. Once I get that (and school isn't too wild) I will install windows and run some benchies for sure. I ran cinebench on the macbookpro as well as my AMD 64 2.75ghz desktop and it took 52 seconds for my dekstop to finish the single thread (this is a single core only cpu) and it took 42 seconds to run the macbookpro with both cores helping. Quite a bit of an improvement. But for sure i will let you know about benchies once I do them!

ah, hope u didn't pay for it. the slipstreaming is pretty easy. u basically rip an ISO of the disk image, download the complete SP2, and run a slipstream app and it melds the 2 into a new ISO.

Why do you need to slipstrem with boot camp?

You need to slipstream SP2 on to a Windows XP cd if it doesn't have it already or else it won't work. Boot Camp required SP2 in order to install.

Nice pics by the way. Never heard about the cd-rom issue. It's weird because yesterday my friend got a new MB and when he tried to load the drivers off of the cd his computer wouldn't read it. So I tried it on my computer and it wouldn't work either. Then finally, I tried it on my PB and it worked. There was still a problem since I couldn't burn the cd no matter what I did (copy-to-copy, copy files to desktop, disk utility image) but I was able to get the drivers off of the cd, and he was able to get his computer up and running.

It was a friend, no payment needed Tonight I am going to install windows (downloaded bootcamp last night but 24 was on so that took priority )

I will let you know how its goes.

Thanks for all the comments! These macs are very slick and sexy, but toasters

Ok, windows is installed. Only problem I had was with the bluetooth drivers. Some windows ones or something installed but the apple ones didn't (or messed up when they did) Windows still allowed me to use my mouse but said it couldn't find it and it didn't allow me to use the scroll wheel. I re-installed and it fixed things (pretty much.) Off to bench after this thing cools down

How about the mentioned whining noise? Do you experience it? Plus how do you like the X1600, is there any buzzing fromthe card (a lot of issues with ACER) or do you experience any noise in dark tones of the colours? Thanks a lot!

My whining is non existant at times and then very tiny at other times. Like some reviews have stated, it is wacky but if you turn on ibooth (the video and picture program) it goes away! I don't have any buzzing from the x1600. Even when the fan turns on full (3dmark) it doesn't get too obnoxious.

Also, the dark tones are perfect (as far as I can tell).

Overall it is a great laptop, but if you want something more towards gaming, maybe getting a x1600 on a windows pc that doesn't get underclocked so far is a better move.

I had the W3J pre-ordered from ASUS, x1600 non underclocked (from what I hear) 14" screen but the mac just turned me on It gets great battery life (at least i think 3+ hours is great) and it is fast and the ability to use both operating systems made me happy. There are probably better and "cooler (less heater)" systems out there, that is for sure. Probably cheaper too. But the macbook pro should definatly be an option, especially if you want to dual boot.

Yesterday I learned the cool speach part of the macbook and OS X. I was on my desktop playing games but wanted to look at something online, so I just said "computer open my web browser" then "computer google" and safari opened and then it opened up google and I could search for what I needed. There is probably something on windows for that, but I thought it was still very awesome!

macs are in a league of their own. I am sitting on my 17 inch G4 and my 14 inch I Book wishing one of them was a Pro...... the new MacBook Pro is tempting.
