How Safe Is It?

Thread Starter
I have a question if anyone knows the answer to this. How safe is it to turn on your computer after recieving it from FedEx? Should you wait because there could be moisture in it from the cold and traveling for 3 days? Was always curious if that is something of an issue or not.

they pack these things rather well, but I'd wait an hour or two just to let the thing warm up to room temp (if you are in a cold weather environment that is)

Heh, I dunno who in thier right mind could sit looking at thier laptop without being able to turn it on for an hour. I would have gone nuts. Although I did have to depot it shortly after I got it.

I look at it this way... 20 degrees outside, laptop w/ LCD

It's worth the extra bit to wait

This is one thing that I never thoguht about to be perfectly honest. But, in any event the Fedex guy comes in the early afternoon and I'm not done with school usually until 3 so I figure it'll have a little wait.

75 degrees here in Houston when mine was delivered, took me about 20 minutes to unpack it and get it set up, hard drive locked up after about 5 minutes of use. Clickety-clickety-click. 5 day wait to get another (weekend). Then a night to reload, still haven't gotten wireless working again (other than with a external Linksys card).

That is soo funny!!!!

I received my laptop at 5:00 pm. It sat in a FedEX truck all day with the temperature around 28 degree F. After taking a few pictures of it to post on this forum I turned the power on. I had no problems with mine.

Some more recent experience. I have an earthmate GPS receiver that I plug into my laptop when I'm traveling. I took my Dell Inspiron 8100 (1.2Ghz 60GB HD 15"LCD) with me on a trip. It was about 18 degrees that day and I traveled two hours to get to an NRA Instructor class. I left the laptop in my car for 10.5 hours. When I got back to my car I let it warm up for about 10 minutes (it takes almost 20 minutes before my car starts cranking out any amount of warm air) and popped open the laptop and secured it to my Car mount and powered it up. The hard drive sounded weird during boot up. I thought I was going to have problems booting it up after 10 hours of sitting out in my car at that temperature. But it booted up with no problems other than the strange noise coming from the HD. Those sounds eventually went away once the car was sufficiently warmed up. I have been using that Dell a lot since that day with no problems.

So the moral here is that when you get your Area-51m rip the box open and turn that baby on, right now! You won't have any problems due to your laptop being out in that cold FedEx truck all day.

Here is a little piece of useless information for you guys. Just rode home on my bike from campus in the rain with my lappie in a backpack. It was only a 15 minute ride, but I was pretty soaked. Anyways, my laptop was not wet at all and I had no problem starting it up when I pulled it out. What significance this information has to this thread is up to you. I attached a radar image just for fun. I was riding in the middle (yellow part) of the first front hitting L.A.
