Interesting. Without going into specifics though, that's like "my brothers friends mothers cousin said it wasn't that good." It may be true, but you're not giving a lot of support for that case...
Ok boys....I did use it for a long time. Otherwise I wouldn't have posted.....

latest versions have just been too unstable(crashes, freezing other apps crashing etc..) I removed it a long time ago and never had a problem since and all those apps that were having problems with it are now running fine.

coldcase, Very happy that without zonealarm you don't have any problems. But there is probably something unusual about your setup, otherwise hundreds of thousands of others would have similar instability problems. I just think you are generally wildly from your own experience. I have installed zonelarm on lots and lots of very different systems and never a problem. I recommend it, and as a free firewall, the best out there, IMHO. At the least, it is worth a go. If it causes problems, then by all means, throw it out. Unlike Norton, it uninstalls cleanly. If it works as most find it works (without conflicts), it is a fabulous firewall.

I use AVAST! Free edition at home, have for about 2 years now. Before that I used Norton and McAfee. In my opinion, the free version of Avast is just as good as those mainstream products. It does an excellent job of keeping itself up to date, both on product version and virus signatures. More importantly however, it catches the viruses. I cannot reccomend it enough.

I just recently tried AVG as well. I know a lot of people swear by it, but it just didn't cut it for me. It was a little clunky for my tastes. But give that a try too. Either way, don't get roped into the McAfee/NAV paradigm of forcing you to purchase a copy when free versions work just as well.

I am a year-long Nod32 user, but even though my license is good for another few months, I uninstalled it and am currently testing KIS (Kaspersky Internet Security Suite) 2006 bld 305. It's currently in beta, but the retail version (which corresponds to bld 299 of the beta) will be released on May 15. Nod32 is a fine program, but I found myself getting more & more concerned over their "cover my ass" philosophy regarding several issues. I won't go into it here (visit the Wilders Security forums to see some examples of user issues--admittdly there aren't very many). Anyway, th eissues were important enough to me.

I too have been using ZoneAlarm firewall for years now and have had no problems. I have used in on 5 different desktops I've built throughout the past 4 years and also on 3 different laptops I've had (2x Dell 700m, 1x Dell 6000).

What the heck....installed it on the wife computer and so far so good. Sure. I agree. It works for a lot of people out there and yes I would try and use it again unlike Norton who, like you don't like.

coldcase: I hope you don't have any problems with the other pc. I am sure you will let us know if you do! Over the last couple of years I have actually removed zonealarm on a couple of under-resourced pcs's (less than 256 MB), as sometimes resources are more important than even a firewall. Once more ram was thrown at them, things were fine. We have it here on 2 pcs's: this one with 1GB ram and the old I8100 with 512 MB. I run it along with AntiVir 7, and Spywareblaster. I have seen more intractable system resource probs with Norton than any one piece of software, other than WinMe and Win98. With their promotions and name many unsuspecting users install Norton with all options turned on, and forever-more their new pc runs like a slug. It's a shame - the early Nortons (system and antivirus) were excellent, and I used them on multiple machines. But that was when Norton himself was the author.

I have heard good things about Microsoft's Onecare Live, but it costs... Maybe it might be a worthwhile way to go for newbies?...Vista will have a two-way firewall, and that will be worth watching too.

There is an interesting firewall guide at http://www.firewallguide.com/index.html.

If you download the onecare live beta in the next 5 days, and upgrade it to a paid account by the 30th, the price is 19.99 for three computers as opposed to 49.95. I put it on my parents, and my kids computer, and so far I like it enough to conider puttin it on mine.

Windows Defender, Spybot, Adaware gets almost everything off

Am on the third release of ZoneAlarm Free, never had a single problem.

Also use AntiVir PE, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware and SpyBot and have a
Sandboxie for 'shopping' browsing use.

All of the above work well togather, at no subscription cost.

Another Kaspersky KIS (build 299) user here. Kaspersky 5.0 had problems with my 1705 with bluescreens caused by http.sys which is a problem between Kaspersky AntiHacker and MS which neither has patched yet. KIS 6.0 build 299 has a newer version of KAH that has caused no problems and I am really happy with it. KAV has been at the top of my list for awhile.
