Calling all Notebook forum members: --> PLEASE HELP ME <--

Hi,

I'm looking for a desktop replacement laptop. My desktop randomly fried the other day and it's not even worth fixing.

I'd like to spend about $1000-1300 for a desktop replacement. This means it should be able to stay on for awhile, last for awhile, have some decent power.

I need a laptop because:
1. Desktop broke, need to replace
2. Need a portable computer for college & coming home & library, etc.
3. Would like a laptop that can play current games and be semi-future proof. I don't need something spectacular!! Just something that will run the games decently.

What I prefer
1. I'd prefer a 14.1" screen but 15.4" is also fine with me.
2. 1GB of Ram,
3. decent video card
4. nice screen (remember, replacing my desktop)

Please not that the longetivity of the laptop should be at least 2 years. I need something reliable for these two years!

GRACIAS!!
PS: My bro got a DellE1505 , I'm waiting to see how it runs. Kinda scared w/ the Dell cuz it may not be reliable.

If you want gaming and power you wont find too many at 14". You say you are looking at a "desktop replacement" laptop which are all 15" +. If you want a sub 17" for cheap, your best bet is probly the DellE1505.

Thanks for the reply, Derek. Is the DellE1505 durable enough to last for 2 years? I'm scared of purchasing an expensive laptop that isn't going to be reliable. I won't have the time to fix these problems at the new college.

Also, I'm OK with a 15" screen.

ya the dell 1505 is perfect for you, but i would also get a desktop for gaming, you can't game on the 1505

Either go for the dell or wait a couple of weeks and get a MSI-1039

thanks guys.

What do you think about the IBM ThinkPad T42 ? I know someone that can get me a decent deal:

1.83GHz Centrino
1GB Ram
128MB ATI FireGL Video Card
80GB HardDrive

total comes to like $1,300, which seems pretty reasonable for a thinkpad.

The Dell is also a good choice, I'm just scared of the reliability.

I HAVE NEVER OWNED A DELL OR THINKPAD, BUT I KNOW IBM MAKES GOOD PRODUCTS (DESKTOPS), PLEASE FILL ME IN. THANKS

I was looking at a IBM ThinkPad T40 w/ the following specs:

Intel 1.7GHz Centrino
1GB RAM
60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
14.1in SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT LCD
128MB ATI FireGL T2 Video Graphics Adapter
9-cell battery

$1400

I think that's pretty fair, for a thinkpad.

The problem with those Lenovos is the video card.. If you plan on doing some gaming, I suggest you stay away from those notebooks..

I'm guessing the Turion is similar to the Intel Duo ?

The MSI seems to have a better video card as well.

An identical configuration to a Dell 1.83GHz Duo // x1400 card costs about $200 more. my budget is really know

all i need is a DECENT laptop for gaming & college. i'd like something very reliable though!
-The turion is similar to the Pentium M. It doesnt have 2 cores, just one.

-The X1600 is a MUCH better card than the X1400

You will probably be able to configure a good MSI-1039 for $1300 (1gb ram, 80 hd, dvdRW, etc) so the real question here is, do you prefer a dual core processor over a better video card?

That is completely up to you... but I would go for the MSI

I think dell is reliable.

If you want a reliable Dell just make sure you get a minimum of a 2 year onsite warranty. I have 3 yr onsite with my E1505 and I know I won't have to worry about it at all. If you want to game some the E1505 is perfect as it can handle most newer games on medium settings. I can even play GuildWars at 1680x1050 on low settings and it runs fine. If you want to do heavy gaming then look at the MSI with the x1600 as it's a much more powerful gpu. If you're going to be doing alot of multitasking(like I do) and play games every once and a while then get the E1505. Look at the price I got for mine, that should give you an idea of what you can get with a few good coupons.

I have owned three Dell laptops and each has only been replaced due to the need for more horsepower. Every one has lasted over 2 years easily (I had my I5000 for three years, my I8200 is still running strong for my wife at 3.5 years old, I8600 is only 2.5 years old and still good). I have my fourth Dell on order now. I highly recommend getting a strong warranty regardless of the manufacturer. I stick with Dell because you can get a 4 year onsite warranty. I don't want to be stuck having to mail my laptop and be without it for 2 weeks if I need service.
