Database recommendations?

Hi Folks:

I need to write a database for my wife's business, and was looking for any advice other database-savvy folks might have. The db will be used mainly to track and record inventory (animal husbandry) and will ultimately be the back end for a website where customers can browse information (including pictures and movies) and submit comments/inquiries. The size will be relatively small (a few hundred records), but it needs to be easy to create and manage, and the user interface needs to be simple. The biggest thing I'm interested in is portability of the final app - either something that can be saved in a format others can use without buying the software, or easily ported to a website for browsing by anyone and editing by a limited number of authorized managers.

I've been looking at either MS Access 2003 or FileMaker 6.0 - both of which seem to offer even more than we need. Any suggestions on which of these two might work best? Are there other db apps I should be considering?

Access would be a good choice. You can use ASP (programming language) to view/edit records in Access through a web site.

Access also allows you to export your database a few different ways. You can export it to a text file or Excel worksheet.

Ok thanks folks for the advice. Access it is. Any good books you recommend for someone just starting out as an Access programmer?

Microsoft Press has a decent book for Access (I forget the actual title of it), though its a bit on the expensive side -- probably around $40. There's also a "Weekend Crash Course" book for Access that you can find for about $20. It has a bright blue cover with orange lettering.

I would suggest getting a book that deals specifically with Access and a seperate book that covers just SQL to get the most out of the database.
