Good news for e1705 upgrade path

Thread Starter
Since dell is offering both the 7900 gs and 7900 gtx in all 4 of thier xps1710 systems. This means that they fit the same. And if you look at the new xps 1710 it looks identical to the e1705 minus some lights and the back of lcd. Also the new xps doesnt offer gigabit ethernet just like the e1705. They also have just released a new bios for e1705 to support the 7900 gs! This makes me come to my conclusion that they are indeed the same 945 chipset. Only thing thats scary is what they are gonna charge for the monster 7900 512 ram!! Most definately it will be a drop in solution with minor bios flash to xps if even nessesary. I love dell and thier upgradeable laptops!!. Even thought the 7800 gtx isnt a huge step up from the 7800 go vanilla, the 7900 gtx 512 will be much more future proffed and overclocks like a champ I presume.

NICE. can wait for the 7900gs to come out

does anyone have a part number so we can call dell spare parts to see if they offer the 7900gs yet?

just a thought.

wonder if this is going to require the battery/adapter purchase (xps) also? like the 9300

425 for 7900gtx, very nicely priced. Now, just wait a couple month and people will start to return the m1710. Then, we can get those cards at a better price!!

425? damn, who needs a 7800GTX at 375.00 anymore.. 50 bucks is worth it!!!!!

now then, will it fit.. hmmmmm

its the same size

Though I heard the $425 is somewhat speculation. I hope its not the 7900 GS thats $425

I will be trying to get ahold of a better card in the next 2 months. Depending on pricing I may be going for the 7900GTX if it is 425 but that would really surprise me too. but it all depends on 7800 pricing at that time compared to the 7900 GS/GTX,

I am all about price vs performance, and I have 5 kids to feed and both my wife and I are in college so I bills out me arse.

thinking out loud, if we get a 7900 gtx to work in a e1705 then basically there is no difference between the e1705 and the m1710 correct?
i already got ahold of spare parts and was told 2-3 weeks before the GTX will be available for asale as they have none in stock (makes sense as no xps1710's are supposed to ship before early May anyway...
from what I was told, it should fit, with some minor case modifications (minor trimming the case around the cpu fan vent, like done in the 7800 gtx swap) and the rest should be plug and play as long as the bios recognises the card...

well, there's those gaudy LEDs and backlit touchpad everyone's going crazy for...
well but performance wise, there wud be no difference?
well, no. it's the same story as the XPS gen1/9100, XPS gen2/9300, and now the XPS gen3/9400/E1705.. with only the higher end components available and a little added bling.

Gaudy yes - HOWEVER, I just thought of a hidden benefit. In the dark, I will never lose the touchpad again.

*snickers* OK, so it's not a deal-maker, but it helps me to rationalize the buying experience.

So then, if Dell is not selling the 7900's for a few weeks, that means they have no NVidia Cards at all yes? (for part orders i mean)

It was my understanding that they had no more 7800 series as well(aside from warrenty items and returns)

this is a bit baffling.
