Xps M1710 Waaaaay Overpriced!!!

Like everyone else, I was happy to see the M1710 released. Then like many others, I got sticker shock when I saw the price. Was that $2600 to start? A decently configged system would easily top $3000 and maybe even hit $4000!!!!! I could buy one if I wanted, but it just isn't worth the money. I'm sure there are some geeks out there who must have the latest and greatest when it's released. Too bad you pay a hefty premium for the pleasure.

It's always, always the way with newly launched products. And in no other industry than the computer industry do prices deflate so fast...so you shouldn't have to wait too long before the 1710 becomes affordable.

well because i am a genius ik decided i would configure an E1705 and an xpsm1710 exactly the same except for the graphics card and the sexy xps support. i was shocked. the xps was 3930 and e1705 was 2937. i assume they use the same mobo so my advice is buy the 7900gtx off of dell spare parts, use a good coupon on the e1705 and save about 1000. i accept rep and blank checks for my services.

Getting an E1705 and modding it to an M1710 might be a great idea. It would also save $1000, and you would have almost the exact same performance!

you might have the same performance except that it is unknown if the e1705 will support up to 4GB or ram, and no docking port. not to mention there is no certainty that the 7900gtx will fit in the 31705, though knowing the people here someone will get it to work...LOL

Just the cost of putting it together must be huge, as many components are new. Those 7900s must cost a bundle, not to mention the new memory and everything...

I'm pretty sure that 4gb thing is a stick of 2 gb, and that's why it's 1,250 for one stick of it. and 2,500 for 2 sticks of it. So if you have the cash I'm sure you can have 4 gb's of memory in your 9400, or whatever that new name they for it is. I wish they just kept the original names but just said Dual core or something, instead of changing the name everytime some modification is done. They should have called the Black one the M17105 and the Red one the M1710.

I agree the m1710 is overpriced but I can get them fully loaded for 2750 Anytime so at that price its not too bad

Just look at where the Gen 2 started in price. Of course it's steep on the day of release. Give it time or use our handy friends here on the forums and I'm sure you can get it for less and less as time goes on. When the price hits the "gotta have it level" you are in.

I agree

Unfortunately, by the time it hits the affordable range, the next XPS will be around the corner... you can never have 'the best' and 'affordable' together..
So, with that logic, I've decided that I am going to put my less-than-one-month-old m170 up for sale and spring for the m1710. Because knowing that my new xps is obsolete will eat at me more and more as time goes on.

Aren't the regular desktop versions of 7900GTX 512s up around $500? Add that to the price of 1920x1200 LCD and the numbers start to add up in a hurry. This is right what I was expecting for this laptop price. Of course you know there will be discounts and deals and such pretty soon - it always starts high.

If you follow Dell last time they released earnings they made record sales - especially in laptops... but then they also had low profit and the company stock lost 25% - so its not like dell makes a killing on their laptops... (maybe all the returns due to sparklies and light leakage have something to do with it).

You should wait for 64-bit Memron / Vista / DX10... IMO (unless you have the money to burn). The M170 will hold over untill then, and the step to Memron will be WAYY bigger than the step from M170 to M1710.
