Hello all,
I've been a Windows user my whole life and am in the market for a thin-and-light, but powerful laptop. My choice had been narrowed down significantly to either the Sony VGN-SZ120P or 160P, but I've been reading about the new MacBook Pro and their ability to run Windows XP as well, and it's got me thinking.
My PC is used primarily for web development/graphic design work right now. I use the Macromedia and Adobe suites all the time. I originally bought Photoshop 5.5 in college and have been upgrading it ever since (currently CS2). I have a volume license for the Macromedia MX2004 suite also. I also enjoy games, which is why I've never considered a Mac until now. I've always known Macs were better for development work, but the game thing held me back.
Anyway, I'm writing to get opinions on whether or not I should go with a MacBook Pro over the Sony. All the software I currently have is for PC (games, Office 2K3, Macromedia Studio MX 2004, Photoshop CS2, Quickbooks Pro, etc.) and I don't really have the budget to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for this software on a Mac.
I understand the simplicity of Macs, as well as the security and lack of crashes, etc., but what else would make it more worthwhile for me over a PC? I think initially I'd be using the Windows side of things much more often, since I own all that software. Is it worth it for me to buy the Mac? It would seem not at this point, but I'm slowly moving into more of a developer than a gamer, so perhaps this would be better in the long run?
One other thing that's also important to me is a docking station. The Sony has one that would allow me to hook up my 2405FPW via DVI, USB devices, LAN, etc. very easily. Does Apple offer such a product?
Basically, pricing is about the same. The Sony is $2499 plus the docking station, and the Mac is $2499 plus a Windows License. What would you do in my situation? Thanks in advance.
