they are both 14.1, and very nice looking laptops... the lenovo is significantly cheaper than the w3j which will let me buy other goodies like a bag, etc... both core duo, around the same specs... the w3j i believe will have 512mb, and i would put 1gb in the lenovo...

i wasn't sure which forum to put this in, but these two seem to be the only ones that really make my decision of spending this much worth it...

thanks for your suggestions,
JDM

Well the biggest deal with the W3J is not just that it is Core Duo and 14" but that it will have a discrete X1600. The Lenovo has integrated graphics or, if you get the decked out version, a Go 7300 which probably isn't much of an improvement over integrated.

So, again, apples and oranges.

ok, well then let me refraise this question to:

Asus W3J, or another 12"-15" equivalent, with no brand limitations...

That's what all the hype is about....there's just nothing out to directly compete with the W3J. Even stepping up to 15.4" screens nothing has Core Duo and anything as powerful as the X1600.

I suppose you could look at a MacBook Pro if you don't mind going Apple.

ima stay away from apple, even though they are pretty...

if i do decide to go with the w3j, i will wait a few weeks to let people review them and hopefully to get a good deal on one since when you buy an ensemble, you usually don't get much with it...

i can look at specs on these laptops all day, but i'm also looking for least amount of cons.

well, what's the next best then? ibm t60? or asus z62f? travelmate?

thanks

Well, what exactly do you want in a notebook? How heavy can it be? Battery life? How powerful of a GPU are you looking for (what games you play)?

Something close to the W3j in size, weight and performance would be a 14" T60p with the FireGL V5200 (X1600 based).

oh i'm sorry, i thought i specified that, but i guess i erased it eariler:

i am a programmer so the faster the processing the better. i also do some web design and photoshop image rendering so I'm hoping the core duo will help with these two things.

i don't play many games, but at most i'd play some original unreal tournament which isn't too intensive.

i'll have a powerful box at home for games and video editing...

but i want the lappy to take notes with and program and web design with through college.

thanks

Sounds like the X1600 would be overkill for you, even integrated graphics shouldn't have any problem handling Unreal Tournament.

You'll benefit from the extra desktop real estate of high resolution screens when coding and photoshop as long as you don't find text too small. I'd take a look at the 14" SXGA+ IBM T60, 14" WXGA+ Dell D620 and 14" WXGA+ LG T1. The D620 and T1 only have integrated graphics, but the D620 should eventually get a dedicated card option. Battery life on all three should be good with the extended 9-cell batteries. The T60 and D620 can also accept second modular bay batteries.

we use a lot of latitude d510s in school now and i like the quality of them.

i like the darker d620 case and customized from dell.com i think it was around $1600 or so.

the ibm on the other hand was pushing $2000+...

i'll read some more on the dell and get some more opinions...

so basically, any laptop that has a core duo will be enough to suit my needs?

thanks
