Aspire 5672WLMI: hal.dll?

Hey guys,
I was trying to merge the hidden partition recovery with the C: drive using Partition Magic but it somewhow froze and now my laptop won't load Windows!
When I try to load it, it says "cannot find root file \Windows\system32\hal.dll please re-install this file".
I've tried the dvd backup thingy but it won't work either, it says "device does not exist" (I think it's looking for C).
HELP!!!!

the recovery dvd may not work without the recovery partition being in place
acer may be able to provide you with a disc that can re-partition the drive

alternatively try to get hold of a windows oem cd and install using the code underneath your machine

good luck

I'm trying to restore Win XP from the cd (luckily I have one for my desktop computer) but it asks for an admin password I don't have.
I've tried mine but it won't work...
Is there any way I could run the laptop in dos mode?
Thanks for not having a floppy drive...grrr.

I'm trying with a freedos cd that I found online but I can't seem to be able to copy the file from the usb key to the hard disc.
And the weirdest thing is: if I wanna try to install XP, when it asks where it should be installed, I still see all the partitions, including the 4 gb Acer recovery thingy.

Sorry I'm replying to myself lol
I've managed to copy the file from the repair console and using a usb key.
Still doesn't work. It's in the right directory though (C:\WINDOWS\system32\).
Could the hal.dll file be specific to my system? Cause the one I copied is from dll-files.com
Man, I'm so confused...

Been there, done that :-). OK, here is what is happening: since you removed a partition the references in your boot.ini file are no longer correct (they were pointing to the second partition, the invisible recovery partition being the first) and windows can't find some important files anymore (hal.dll among them). With your freedos CD you should be able to edit that file to change the references to something valid. Look at your desktops boot.ini how it should look like.

Good luck,

Thanks guys.
I've already installed a fresh XP though because after 4 hours of messing around in DOS mode, I just couldn't find the solution... The laptop boots XP now so I'm gonna go ahead and format the C: drive completely then re-install everything.

Alright, after a clean new install of XP Pro SP2, everything seems to run fine!!
I installed the Acer utilities as well.
A HUGE thank you to oobnuker for his install guide, that was very helpful!
I'm just wondering where I could get the Acer Arcade software: I think it was kinda cool. Is it somewhat hidden on the back-up dvd?

Hahah, seems like I'm not the only one who had to fresh install Windows after removing the hidden partition drive.

Seriously!
That hidden partition is the devil!!
Now it's still there and Windows says it's healthy and all. I don't get it and I don't even wanna try again to delete it.

Look what I found on Acer's website:
" If the PQService partition is deleted using fdisk or any utility in Windows you may need to reinstall Windows."

I wish they'd say that somewhere in the instruction booklet and not hidden somewhere on the site...

Delete the recovery partition and edit your boot.ini file to point to partition 1 BEFORE rebooting the system, and there will be no problem.

I learned this "the hard way"
