Soon 7900 GS is coming to 9400 / e1705

Thread Starter
There is a new bios update, and

on the description.

1. Added support for NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS.
2. Thermal control algorithm optimized for NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS.

So It means 7900GS will be coming to 9400 / e1705 very very soon.

It already came out today with the XPS laptops.

no one knows that yet

I think that's pretty good evidence. Good news for you guys.

I think its a lot of speculation and very little real proof. Just because the e1705 has bios support doesn't mean that they will offer the 7900 gs or 7900 gtx in the e1705 on the build to order side or upgrade side (not to say someone won't get it work, but I am talking about support for it from Dell without voiding your warranty) . And if and when they do, it will probably require a 9 cell battery and 130 watt power brick purchase too. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have either of these cards in my e1705, but I say let's wait for more concrete proof before these speculation threads get out of hand, and then we have folks believing rumors instead of facts.

Im not sure the GS would require a 130W power supply. Its something like 1/3
of the wattage of the GTX and Quadro 2500. Plus 7800 go works for the 1705
and the smaller die size means less power consumption.

But still dont think it will be offered for 1705 anytime soon. They are offering it
with the new xps and it would be plain dumm to offer it in almost identical and
a lot cheaper model. But thats just my two cents

I agree, but it does not really need to be OFFERRED now does it? If we can get it via Dell Spare Parts then we are good to go.

swap-o-rama...

That is true. But i think MOST users will prefer to stay on board with their
guarantee.

For ppl willing to get their hands dirty and tinker around the GS is definedly a
good option. And should be available in the near future, if they have enough
cards to sell as spare parts. NVIDIA is not the most reliable manufacturer at
the moment.

I myself would seriously consider the 1705 if I could get the 7900 as an factory
option. But I think I will have to "settle" for the M90 (if they ever resolve
the 1gig memory module problem here in Finland).

What really sucks is just all the waiting. Oh well, nothing anyone can do. Has anyone tried to order the Geforce Go 7900 GTX part from Dell?
Oh, by the way, Dell is supposed to be sending me a replacement for my E1705, I told them if it didn't have a Geforce Go 7800 or better then we are going to have issues. I will post in the forums once I find out what they are building the replacement E1705 with.

good luck with that, I hope they have a shortage of 7800's and you get the 7900gs that would rock for you!!!

Well, no 7900 GS, not even a 7800, but a stinking x1400, but I have been talking all this morning with Sales, Order Support, and Tech Support, and I found out that the 7900 GS will fit into the e1705. Also, Tech Support told me to take the 7800 from my e1705 and put it in my replacement system, then after that call them or chat with them back and they will send me a replacement for it, either a 7800 or 7900 GS. I took that option since they upgraded the heck out my replacement system (T2600 from a T2500, 2GB of 667 memory from 1GB of 533 Memory, Intel Wireless card from the Dell wireless, and 100 GB 7200 RPM drive from a 100GB 5400 RPM Drive). Hopefully this will work out. I will keep this forum updated if I get a 7900 GS.

I hope you can have it!

Looks like the 7800 is back available in the e1705's. Well I am going to chat with tech support Monday or Tuesday and see if I can get them to send me a 7900 GS.
its not listed for the 1705/9400, but I am sure if you can get ahold of the part # for the 7900GS (might be in the forums somewhere here already in another thread) you could be able to swing it. I am ordering my 7900GTX next week myself if they have it in stock yet.

In all honesty, if you already have a 7800go, getting a 7900gs is really not going to justify the purchase, it's marginal improvement.

however the 7900 GTX is a different story.
Yeah, but I will be faster than a plain vanilla 7800, draw less power and won't require jumping through hoops to work like the 7900GTX will require for the E1705/9400 :-)

I personally, however plan to upgrade to the 7900GTX when I can grab one from spare parts

Please keep us posted...a lot of us were on the tail end of ordering an E1705 when only the ATI1400 was available....everything I have been told is that the 7900GS would be a HUGE improvement over the ATI 1400 and the 7900GTX, well, oh boy!!!! I would love to have someone put in a 7900GTX in a 1705 and say, no mods, no BIOS change, etc. etc. and it freakin rocks!!!
