I just got a new notebook and I really needed to go on aim, but instead of finding trillion or an old version of aim I just downloaded the new one from aim.com. I uninstalled it and deleted all the program files associated with it, but I still see AOLLaunch and AOLSoftware in the startup section of msconfig. I have completely deleted the directories to these programs, but they still show up. Did it modify the registry or something? How can I get this stuff off the list without doing a system restore or reinstalling windows?

Some of the most annoying programs include a utility that continually check if it still is in the startup folders or the hidden registry startups, and then copies itself again there if it has been removed. This is also a method used by trojans and some viruses. Use Hijack this for searching and deleting these (and other) settings you dont approve of. For other startup functions, I think Mike Lins startup utility gives the best overview of hidden settings (even more than MsConfig), and you can download it here
