Yay arrived this morning at 09:30 - typing on it as we speak..

First impressions:

Not as big or heavy as I thought. In fact I think it is slightly lighter than my Sony 16 incher - which is good!

The sound is very impressive for a laptop - very loud!

screen is very nice!

seems sluggish out of the box - although i'll just remove a lot of the crap and see what happens - else a re-install should do.

The keyboard is nice and responsive although I think I am gonna have to get a Palm/wrist rest.

Packaging was ok although it appeared as if the driver cd etc. box had everything just chucked into there - hmm not impressive. In fact it had a feel of everything being chucked together at the last minute. No damage though so just a minor point.

All in all seems pretty cool - more later - oh and one more thing - very very quiet....

My XPS 2 was also sluggish out of the box, a reinstall did the trick.

I got mine too, the 120 dpi thing for the display is weird, but now to test my 7900 GTX on some games!
I immediately put mine back down to the default 96dpi, looks much better to me.

gonna have to do that as well - gonna do a reinstall as well as there is far too much junk on there... I mean why?

I can only assume someone at Dell gets a kick out of it

Sony are even worse which is impressive to say the least!

getting there

well apparantly mine is coming tomorrow! checked my status and said pre call - no answer. now they didnt ring me so i rung them and sorted out a date. bit weird but its got it on record that is meant to go out on the 1st. anyway, weird how it got it arrived on 1st, yet in the eta box it still says the carrier will ring to arrange date. and also what does stuff going in and out the hub mean? weird! anyone able to explain plzz??
Hopefully will arrive tomorrow, looking forward to getting it. when you guys are all doing reinstalls, are you doing it wit dell stuff or your own copy of windows?

Hope you enjoying your laptops!

My First Laptop. This thing is pretty sweet, screen doesn't appear to have any dead pixels, i'm not about to go to profiling the back light consistency or anything, bottom left and bottom right corners are slightly dark, i've seen that on most screens though.

It's taken a while to get the junk off it, slowly getting there, i'm not keen on doing a fresh install of XP MCE or anything. I have found that the dell dvd player (cineplay) causes the sony dvd drive to run at full speed the whole time, which is hella loud. Using media centre seems to keep the dvd drive very quiet however.

Have yet to try any games, but bluetooth and wireless seem to work fine. Haven't got an internet connection for it yet, that's something to try another day along with some games once my exams are over.

It feels pretty damn sturdy, it's looking good for the predicted 3 years until i replace it/him/her

Got the M1710 today and i must say im very impressed! This thing feels solid! and the finish is very good!

The size and weight were one of my inital concerns but when i opened the box and picked it up i was pleasantly suprised - its far from the heavy bluky object often portrayed.

The screen is a samsung - and it sounds very similar to chrispk's - slight darkness in the bottom corners but nothing that concerns me. there are no dead pixels and the picture is clear. Ill give it a 7/10.

On booting up i hit crtl alt delete and found 75 proccesses running! A fresh install of mce reduced this to 50 as well as gaining over 300 points in 3d mark 05 to reach 8500.

Overall a very nice machine - oh and the speakers were a big suprise - excellent for a laptop! Ill try the creative upgrade soon as someone was nice enough to give me a free key - thanks if your reading this

I havent tried any games yet but im installing bf2 as i type - thats it for now ill post some pics up later

The hub probably means one of their central depots or something - don't really know. But the delivery times seem spot on so I guess you better get ready for tomorrow!

A reinstall is unavoidable. It just seems so sluggish that even if I carry out my original plan (i.e. uninstall all the junk with Uninstaller pro) it just won't cure the slowness. Clean the thing out - that's all I can do.

Haven't really checked my laptop out properly yet - will hopefully do so in the next few days.

Can anyone receommend a good backpack? I want something low profile - not too bulky. I was looking at the Techair 5703 but the only thing holding me back is the garish red. They have a better blue one (5702) but that is for 15.4" laptops. Anyone tried the UK version of the Targus XL?

TIA

Anyone seen that there's a free 2gb memory upgrade on the dell webpage now?
Will that mean that even better deals are available.

Oh, and to all the people out there with reps getting them good prices on these beasts, do you think that good prices on the new M2010 will also be doable?

Hi new to the forum, waiting for my XPS to arrive. Dell are also including the 100gb 7200 drive and the DVD writer in the price now, price has also dropped. I reckon with some haggling a full spec one could be obtained for £1400... nice!

Arrived!

Apparently mine got delivered at work today yet im not working till tonight . sorry had a moment last night as was reading all these bad writeups on walsh western and not delivering etc. lol. also, worst nightmare! xps price have dropped big time on the website now. as mooncat wrote, dvd writer now standard, only two types of hard drive, discount on carrying cases and the starting price for the top model is only 1599. so pricing up mine came up to 2287.04, so i only saved 400 quid compared to the previous week when the price was 400 pounds more expensive!! bet you're gutted if you ordered one yesterday on the old price lol. why have prices dropped, is it cause of the intel processor new prices?

fuzzmo, not sure if helps but dell have 20% off carrying cases at the moment online. i bought a dell xl case but my dad has an xl targus case and he says is very good. targus i would say do very good cases.

Hi all,

im new to the forum aswell, i took delivery of my M1710 last night i got it maxed out but paid the price for it i think mine cost £1900 in the end - i got a discount but not as much as some of you guys

First impressions is its a little bigger then i was expecting but very very nice!

As others have said i have noticed it being a little slow out of the box so im looking to do a re-install tonight. One question I do have is if I use the Dell windows cd will it just put all the crap back?

I also havent had time to game / benchmark it but i will do later on and post some pics for you

Happy days means Lappy days !!!

Hi All

I see you all got your lappies and are happy with them, I hope the rep I knew gave you all a good deal.

Im very happy with mine but I done seem to to anything else on it than play games, there is no music or movies on it. Just games I guess it will be like that for a few months.

Anyways now for the bags, I have been looking online for a few days and this site sends booq bags to UK and Ireland

http://rushfaster.com/listing.php?pK...earch+For+Bags

this is the one I want.

The price is over 100£ inc shipping from Aussie but it if you have a 2grand machine you need a good bag.

You can also get the large targus bag for 60$ + shipping from ebay USA which is a cheaper option.

In the UK they only sell a smaller XL targus bag but not alot of space.

I have read loads of reviews and I think the booq bag is the best, there is a smeller one but I need to bring loads of stuff on my travels.

Let me know if you have any better options for me on bags.

XPS kicks ASSSS!!!

JKK
