unmountable_boot_volume blue screen after pinmod upgrade

I just recently upgraded my CPU pinmoding a 1.6 to 2.13 a few days ago on my inspiron 9300. Now all of a sudden I get a blue screen that says unmountable_boot_volume when i load up. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Sounds like your hard drive has become corrupt. I would try booting with your Windows XP cd and see if it 'sees' your partition.

If so.. Try fixes like the ones mentioned here.

run fixboot and fixmbr (thiknk they're the names of the recovery console commands) from the xp cd. Be warned however that these utilities can "break" the install under certain conditions, requiring a reformat.. Use these as a last resort, but they have the potential to help if you've no other options.. worst case scenario, you'll just need to format the drive and start over, granted it is softwae related.. you may also want to try another harddrive, or try your current harddrive in another computer.

Hold the f-12 key when your computer is running through the Dell diagnostics screen (big dell logo with a bar underneath) and then select run from CD.

So when you hit F12 for boot menu you don't get a screen that asks you to select your boot device?

When that comes up you choose CD.

Then you get the following message.

Press any key to boot from CD........

And then you press any which will start to boot the XP CD.

First off I put my win xp cd in then I press F12 at start up. Then it brings me to the boot up menu and i click on CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive.

Once I clicked on Enter it brings me to the black screen asking if i want to go to safe mode/networking/prompt, last known good configuration or start windows normally.

It does not ask me to press any key to boot the cd.

I would try another XP disk if you have one... Otherwise..

It looks like the IDE controller on the motherboard has gone on the fritz...

Time to send it in to Dell.

You have a legit CD key, it's not piracy if you download another copy.

Screw ebaying it. Just download a new copy and use your current serial.

Humm, can you try the CD in another computer?

You can try doing F2 and going into BIOS and changing the boot order to boot from CD first instead of the HD.

And yeah the installation probably got corrupt along the way. Mine did it last night as well when I was monkeying with voltages. So guess what I'm doing this weekend

why don't you enter your bios, and set the cd as the first boot device. that way if you have any cd in the drive at bootup, that is bootable it will ask:

press any key to boot from cd.

get into bios by pressing f2 or del.

I have tried using the CD on a computer as well as my laptop making sure to go to bios and making the cd the first boot device but both times nothing happened. When I ran the CD in Windows on my computer it runs though.

I have put the CD/DVD drive 1st and also disabled all the other options but i got a message that says "no bootable devices".

I have noticed that you can download win xp bootable disks from the microsoft website. I don't have a floppy disk drive, but would there be a way of transferring the bootable disks onto one bootable CD?

I managed to get another win xp cd, got to the recovery console screen and typed in chkdsk /p
on the dos prompt but it got stuck on 27% complete.

Then i rebooted and tried the chkdsk /r command and again it got stuck on 27%.

Any ideas on what to do from here, greatly appreciated

I had a similar issue with my friend who did the 1.8 to 2.4ghz pin mod. Disable speedstep and rerun the windows installation using the cd see if that clears it up.

I have disabled speedstep in BIOS.

I am trying to rerun the windows installation, but it says the partition is either too full, damaged, not formatted or formatted with an incompatible file system.

It is asking if i want to format the patition using the NTFS file system, quickly or normally, how should I proceed?

New problem now: I decided to format the disc and its got me windows back up and running again. However, it shows no icons on the desktop and i can't find my network connection anywhere. It's asking me to activate windows xp over the internet, but i have no way of loggin onto the internet thru my laptop.

What do i do?

SOunds like the Windows XP CD you got is jus a restore CD and not the full WINDOWS XP version. Is it the one that came with your 9300 in a white plasic sheath and is like a maroon color? IF so then you need the actual WINDOWS XP CD. Request one from DELL.

When you first install XP, the only Icon on your desktop is the recycle bin. Can you right click on your desktop, goto properties, goto customize desktop, and click on my documents, my computer, my network places, and internet explorer? I might be misunderstanding you, but if you are able to get back to the network connection, you may need to have the network/wireless drivers on a usb key or cd rom and reinstall them before you have connectivity. You can exit out of the activate screen, you can always get it to come up again once you have your drivers installed. Hope this helps.
