7900 GTX Go upgrade

So ! Can we upgrade XPS 2 with this new monster from NVidia ???
Since Dell has there own form factor for there laptops, it all depends on Dell.

If they make the heatsink similar to that of the XPS2 and i9300, then yes. We can upgrade to it; but if the form factor follows the newer i9400, then it's very doubtful.

IM sure will hear answers to this fairly soon

You're not looking at worldly gains if you already have the 7800GTX. Based upon the difference between the 6800 Ultra and the 7800 GTX, I won't be getting a 7900 GTX. With that said, if it's the 512 version, I might be tempted if the price was right and the mod worked.

Studying the "M1710 Service Manual" might help
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...n/SM/index.htm

Edit: When looking at the XPS2 SM and the M1710 SM side by side they look the same.

naw, im pretty sure that the 7900 is physically bigger, like the x1400.

yeah but the question is: does the xps m170 support the 7900 gtx?
On the latest bios update for the E1705, they add support for the 7900GS, does that mean they're going to start putting those in that laptop?

Also, would that lead to them (the M1710 and E1705) having the same form factor?

I hope so as upgrading the video card was the biggest selling point for me. I thought we would have more options than the 6800 ultra and the 7800 GTX.

Is very possible, DELL is going to have a hard time dealing with the US$ 1999 offer from toshiba that includes the 7900GS. The i9400 is the answer.

If the latest BIOS supports the 7900GS on the i9400 it'll sure be compatible with the 7900GTX

from what I know of the 7800 GTX in the 9400, I can say it is do-able but theres gonna be some hitches. One the keyboard screw post is in a different position on the XPS1710/9400 than the xps m170/9300, secondly we have to bend the right heatpipe to fit the 7800gtx in the 9400 as its a little short, thus for the 7900 gtx its gonna be a little too tall.
all in all, with a little bending, and removing that keyboard post as we do to get the 7800 gtx in the 9400.

Well I went the 1710 route, but I am praying that at least the 170/gen2 can upgrade to the 7900. Imo, it would be a very good sign that Dell cares about the XPS buyers for more than the initial sale, and would spur further sales in the future. That, to me, is what people buy the XPS for, to at least have the option of a better gpu down the road. I'm positive there are enough users out there who would upgrade to justify at least an initial round of cards. It would probably pay, however, to make sure you got in on that round if you wanted one, just to be safe.

Dell has everything to lose and much to gain if they just drop people off the ledge and don't offer future cards for the XPS's. I don't think they "owe" as much to the 9400 crowd, but that's ok, 9400 owners have made their own opportunities But the XPS folks are going to remember if Dell drops the ball, when it comes time to replace that laptop.

So here's hoping for those that want them, that there is a 7900 and even a G80 option in the future for 170/Gen2 folks.

Even if we can't upgrade, the 7800 is still a good card. When the next generation comes around, we may be feeling the lack.

you're right, I believe the next change worth to do is DX 10.

Its not gonna happen without some serious modding. IMO Stick with with a 7800GTX. Its faster but not much. Both have 24 pipes, the same vertex shaders, just the 7900GTX Can O/C much higher. I run my 7800GTX Go at 430/1200 daily. This stock refrence clocks for the desktop 7800GTX card.
