Odd IE problem

Thread Starter
My laptop d/l'd one of the XP updates. Ever since then when I try and use Internet Exploder or Napster I get a warning message asking if I want to download or save the info I'm trying to look at. I've tried using the McAfee antivirus, and it just brings up a blank box. I tried to uninstall the McAfee stuff and it also just brings up a blank box. My computer has the little green box with a yellow arrow (downloading an update from McAfee), but never finishes, and I have to shut it down manually before I shut down the computer, or it won't let the computer shut down.

WTF should I try? I was getting ready to do my yearly disc wipe on it. But I'd really rather try and figure out what's going on with it before I do the wipe.

TIA

Do you get the warning message on any web site, or only on certain types of files, or only when you're doing certain activities? Can you provide the text of the warning? (On some dialogs in Windows, you can use Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.)

Full disclosure: I used to work on IE, many years ago....
