Alienware is NOW using INTEL 3.2 EXTREME EDITION Processor w/ 2.5 Cache !! on Area51m.

Man now I'm really intrigued. I'm not sure if I should wait for the Aurora-M (Amd Athlon64 notebook) or get this one???

Depends on how soon the athlon comes out for the lappy, though AW has already shown them at various expos already.

The cost increase for the EE makes it unviable. The added performance is only on some applications and at best it's 10%, which isn't worth an extra $650. I'm not sure, but I think that it runs hotter too... but so does the new athlon chip as well.

Not worth it, only to the rich guy yes, but I won't consider getting it. I'm happy with a P4 3.0ghz ~

I dont know, I think if your a hardcore gamer that chip is going to help out alot with the extra onboard cache.

True, for the extrermist/people that just want that +1/whatever benchmark . . .

What about all those people that said I have to have the best I have to have the fastest??? LOL bah bah bah now it comes out...

I was reading some benchmarks on the EE vs the regular 3.2 chip and it made quite a difference on FPS gaming.

I ordered the EE on my desktop knowing damn well theres going to be plenty of Doom3 and Half-Life 2 playing for me in 3 months! I mean if your using your pc for standard things, whats the point of getting an Alienware/high end computer to begin with?

Thats like buying a hot rod car and driving it down a block to pick up a loaf of bread!!
Push that baby for all shes worth :P

As was said earlier, the EE chip is like the pentium chips with MMX, it's like a beta test chip for the prescotts. It's going to be REALLY HOT. And games will still run fine on your 2.0 Ghz Processor! A 2 Ghz P4 is still fine for gaming, people just bought new computers 1 and 2 years ago, and average families are not going to go out and buy new computers, so Doom 3 and HL2 will run fine on a 3.0HT P4 or whatever setup you have. Just remember, with the heat your laptop blows out, a desktop with similar specs will almost always do better do to cooling. Just my thoughts

Drat. Foiled again with the 'neater stuff comes out after you buy' snafu.

too expensive for me.
The battery life would be shorter than a New York Minute
post #12 of 19
Ya, your right about that one tompty.
And who knows just how hot the machine would be... Cooling isn't much of an issue anymore, but a hotter chip would really be pushing the limits of this system IMHO

the 3.4ghz EE is scary... www.anandtech.com lot at it demolish presscott and athlon fx chips
post #15 of 19
So do you think that this is probably something that is not worth the extra 600?
I know i don't think it is.

2.8GHz, 1GB are must haves anything higher is really just wasting money you might as well save it for the Geforce 5700 coming next month
post #17 of 19
The GeForce 5700 is receiving a lukewarm response from the people at Anandtech and Tomshardware. I see another Radeon victory here...

we'll see... until i see some real numbers from the M11 i wont say anymore

"One thing that's not hot though is the relatively low maximum thermal power of Athlon 64 FX 53, which at 89W is so much less of a problem for system builders than the 150W or so the 3.4GHz Extreme Edition P4's is rumoured to generate. Intel is accustomed to quoting only nominal thermal power values for its processors, whilst AMD tell the whole story and quote the maximum thermal power that requires dissipation.

The bottom line is that an expensive BTX form factor chassis won't be a prerequisite even for Athlon 64 4000+ or the 2.6GHz Athlon 64 FX 55, as they are set to have a maximum thermal power of 105W, which is significantly less than the current 3.2GHz P4 Extreme Edition (110.8W)."
