Review: Asus W3J Review - Page 2

The DVD "problem" was easy to fix - he just got a different program. Don't use the included crap.

Glad to see you got the DVD issue worked out. I am also really impressed with the 3dmark score (of course, you can get that higher if you overclock). But that is something I will be a little hesitant to do once I get mine. Also glad to hear that heat wasn't an issue. I have been on the pre-order list for nearly a month. The w3j has been pushed back nearly a month in the states so all of these positive reviews are only making it harder and harder to wait. But much more worth it I suppose. I'm glad you're happy with your purchase.

I just found out from asus the hard drive speed is 4200rpm.

Further tests are showing the heat stays around 54C whilst I was burning a lot of dvds, battery life is staying around the 2 1/2 hour mark (working in photoshop, word and surfing online with wifi and bluetooth active).
I did try playing doom 3 at close to native resolution whilst the dvds were burning and there was quite a loss in frame rate, so much so that I couldnt play. This may be normal but I thought this is what a dual processor is for? Maybe I was pushing it too much but I am a little disappointed with that

Watched a full dvd on battery and it did skip for a split second every 10 seconds or so but you may not notice this if you arent looking for it. Its only really noticable on pan shots and you have to concentrate hard.

The aluminium lid does leave fingerprint marks all over it but are easy to wipe off.

Still a great laptop but the above points may help you in your decision

Thanks alot for the review!!
Yeah thought the English version hard drive is 4200rpm, but you can upgrade it at www.asuslaptop.co.uk to 5400rpm for 109+VAT, or stick in a 60gb 7200rpm for 99+VAT. Tempting!

Anyword on the RAM speed?
Ted, where are you from?

They speculate that US will be the only 5400 rpm w3j's.....im kina worried

doom 3 is hard drive intensive, so it might be lagging because of your 4200 prm drive.
If might be worth upgrading your hard drive... Stick in a 7200rpm drive and all the lag you talk about may disappear. Its a real shame they stuck a 4200rpm drive inside. This is probably your bottleneck in your system.

wow this laptop is very compact and it's capable of playing games...

it's only 20% less powerful than my desktop- freaking awesome

I believe the RAM speed is 667 MHz or something. It's standard for the newer Centrino Core Duos.

Hi,

Theres been some reports that the W3J goes really hot - as in 76 degrees celsius (170F), and that the fan is hot like a hairdryer. Is that the case, and does it therefore also make a lot of noise? Are there otherwise any issues that have come up, now after a months usage? Thanks.

I sent a message to teds asleep on the heat/fan/misc issue, and this is his response:

Hi, I dont actually have the W3J anymore. The 4200rpm hard drive was too slow and causing bottlenecking. But with a faster hard drive it would have been a perfect laptop and I may consider one in the near future. I still thoroughly recommend it.

The heat is a bit of an issue if you are right handed and using a mouse on that side, you definitely feel the heat like there is a mini hairdryer on low warming your hand but all the while I was monitoring the temperature and I dont believe it went into the 60s once. At one point I held my hand in front of the vent while playing an intensive game to see how long I could keep it there and it was fine, it didnt burn. Considering how amazing this laptop is, the heat wasnt an issue for me at all. As far as I could tell, the inside was keeping under 60 because the hot hair was being pumped out of the side.

I cant think of any other points apart from what I wrote in the review - great screen, compact and light, quality build, decent sound.

Bad points being the dvd skipping a little which I more or less solved with a decent dvd player (Theatretek was the best) and of course the slow hard drive which made me sent it back, If they offered me a faster drive I would have taken it in a second but it wasnt available at the time.

Cheers

I don't suppose they make a W3J with a 15.4 screen size?

From the reviews and people comments, this is exactly what I am looking for, if it was only a 15.4 screen size!

Well, actually that would be the W1j. Unfortunately, it's not for sale in the US, primarily because it costs about the same as the W2j (that's why I've heard, at least. I'd love one too!). If you live in Europe or Asia, though...
Bah, why is it that everywhere but the US has all of the great deals. I can't even get a free bag over here...

I was getting bored today, so I did a google on some new W3J reviews. They are starting to pop up these days, in case there are some that have not read everthing there is to read about the W3.

hey does anyone know of a site that sells this as a barbone? I just can't seem to find one without a hdd (I have laptop hdds coming out of my ears... literally... but not really) anyway! lol

ummm yeah so can you configure this anywhere? or is it one of those Asus' that can't be configured except for the RAM and CPU?

Thanks

the w3j is an ensemble. it's premade and can't be configured, unless you have the reseller do it for you at extra cost.
