And although they have differnce's for the most part they are Subtle, if you want to talk about effects in performance. I highly doubt the M90 is all of a sudden going to be less prone to breaking just because it's labeled LATTITUDE.

But I feel that ALL OF THESE MACHINES Are Excellant Quality and shouldn't break on you.

However it is to my knowledge, Unless they changed it, that because the Lattitude series is only for Business, that Dell SUPPORT is ENGLISH SPEAKING, PEOPLE FROM AMERICA, that can be a huge plus in itself.

Obviously these machines are built from the same chassis family, and have only small differences in the motherboard, etc. What I'm talking about (and this MAY not be the case with the NEWEST latitude/precision) is the quality of things like the palmrest, trackpad, bezel etc. In the past the Latitude/Precision series have used some type of alloy for those types of parts, whereas the Inspiron series have used only the "cheap" plastics which wears out quicker. I am by no means the authoritative source on this, merely adding what I've experienced and heard.

As far as performance goes, I never said the fact that it's labelled "Latitude" or "Precision" has anything to do with that. In fact, I indicated that as far as games, etc go, the Precision would't perform as fast as the equivalent Inspiron.

ANYWAY, to summarize for the OP, the M1710 will have a slight edge for gaming, but the M90 looks cooler and may have better longevity as far as the casings etc. In addition, you will probably get better support (if you need it), for the reasons darkloki outlined.

That's what I'm saying though, the PLam REst and the Actual Casing is Identical

OH. Dell decided to cut some more costs, eh? Looks like the only differences now, then, are support and looks....

actually, I think they upgraded the quality of the inspitons to match the Precision as oppsed to lowering the quality of the precisons to the inspirons. Or maybe they met in the middle somewhere. The M90 looks good and when i get mine in I'll post my thoughts on it's build quality

I like the fact that the M90 can use the D/Dock. That would be a big plus as far as I am concened. I'm definately leaning towards the M90 or it's successor for my next laptop (unless I can get work to replace my D800 with an M90 .

If your company does in fact let you do that, let me know what company you work for.

Well, two things:

* There has been some discussion that the 9400 is not magnesium alloy. It *is* a bit lighter, so it may be true. But both M90 and M1710 are magnesium for sure
* The M90 has a three-button touchpad. I'd love that on M1710.

I would get the 1710 since I am more of a gamer.

I'm not so sure about that. The pictures in the Online service manual for the M1710 don't show the connector on the bottom.

Compare the service manual for the M90:
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1000139

With the same page for the M1710:
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1000139

Though it's certainly possible that they didn't use an updated pic for that page in the M1710 manual.

on page 26, item 9 is the docking connector.... And they let you buy ddock stuff with your m1710 order.... The better have a connector if they want you to buy the dock!

Ah cool then. Guess they used an old pic for the other link. I couldn't find the docking station on the order screens, but I just did a quick run through.

Tell ya what. Buy me one of each. I'll test the two, and give you back the one that you should have bought in the first place.

No, huh?

Personally, I'd go with the M1710, like others have said, because of the "wow" factor, because of the powerhouse video card. I hear a lot of people complain about the video editing, but I have to tell you that unless you are doing some SERIOUS (and I'm not saying you don't) CAD work, or heavy rendering, then what the heck - it's not like the FX7900 is slow by any means. We're talking about lost seconds, maybe minutes on a huge, detailed render - not hours or weeks. Get an Intergraph if your working that hard on rendering.

If you are a part time gamer, then go for the gaming video card.

do you mean game graphics? or for creating graphics, such as in photoshop or a 3d program like Maya?
