M5700 & Strategy/RTS Gaming Performance

Hi Guys/Gals,

I am about ready to press the button and get the M5700 as configured:

2.0GHz Pentium M
2GB Memory
100 GB 7200 RPM HDD
WUXGA 1900x1200
DVD Burner/CD Combo
GeForce 6800
Windows Media Center Edition

This will be my main computer for several years to come. I will use it for Internet browsing, regular Word/Excel stuff, recording some TV shows, and gaming. The gaming will be all stategy and real time stategy-type games such as: Galactic Civilizations II, Civilization IV, Star Wars Empire at War, The Movies, Space Rangers and the forthcoming Command & Conquer 3.

Here are my big questions because I'm about to settle for the lowly 6800 video card because this system has everything else I want. Will those games I listed above, or similar type games, work well and run flawlessly at any resolution I want with this configuration? Has anyone tried any of these games out yet with this system and the 6800 card? All my heavy First-Person Shooters & sports gaming are done on the Xbox 360 so I will not be playing those types of games on this system.

I'm trying to make myself feel better because I know I'm settling for a lesser videocard but the M5700 has everything else I want and all for just over $2,100. I could have a similarly configured Sager system with the 7800 GTX for only a couple hundred more.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Go with a Dell XPS, unless AW has an upgrade for the 6800.

I got the m5700 and I like it. Small enough to carry around to classes but still has the huge 17" widescreen.

I play HL2, World of warcraft mainly and I get >50fps at 1920x1200 res and maxed out settings. I believe it will do really well with the RTS's you listed.

pump - no can do. Dell discontinued the XPS M170, which I was going to order and I refuse to pay the high price for the new XPS M1710. Also, the M5700 6800 card cannot be upgraded.

Jeff - thanks! That helps a little to know that. I'm assuming you have the same config as the one I listed. How long have you had your M5700? Are you really happy with its performance?

Ive had it for about a month now. I love it, hasnt crashed once.

My only gripe is that mine runs hot...62C at idle and 90 during gaming. But it never locks up or artifacts.

Get a cooler.

I have 1GIG ram and RAID0 80g 5400RPM drives

i love my 5700 it plays all the games ive got. BF2, FEAR, Age of the Empires 3, and Oblivion and plays them all well. the only issue i have had with mine is that i think the paint is fading on the left side where you rest your hand. but i guess ive had mine for 5 months now and been playing it hard. and mine has the same specs as the one your looking at. its a good choice.

dont worry the m5700 will rape those rts's. my laptop is a bit faster, but im running all those games at max res and max settings and im getting extremely high fps. its smooth as hell and i know the 5700 will breeze through those games too.

Thanks for the all the replies guys! Much appreciated.

I placed the order last Wednesday via phone (I was away on a business trip and I have no laptop ). Thanks for the reassurance.

oo jack oo - I called Alienware and they said the M5700 video card cannot be upgraded. Oh well.

I will give my review after I receive it and had a chance to play around with it for awhile.

I can't wait!
