Replacing M3438G - Dell I9400 or FSC Amilo Xi 1546?

So I own FSC Amilo M3438G -- unfortunately one might say. First of all, I bought this notebook about nine months ago. Do I have tha lagging bug? Well, it appears very slightly in Firefox and when I watch DVDs but not at all in games. Does it have any other problems? Well, my notebook freezes/tilts quite regularly when I play games or generally keep my notebook on for a long time. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't happen so often that it'd drive me crazy. Still, it's a bit annoying. And I also have sound problem or the brrrrr problem (I'm sure you know what I mean).

Now I'm told by some people that I can still return this notebook for a full refund. I myself doubt this a bit but apparently here in Finland the FSC will give the refund according to some people.

But what do I do? I really like this notebook otherwise. The screen is great, the style is great and the keyboard is great. On the other hand, I don't necessarily want to end up with a faulty notebook. So should I take the refund and buy another notebook? But what notebook? I live in Finland and as I want a 17" laptop I don't really have other choices than Dell I9400 or the successor of FSC, Xi 1546, which isn't out yet. We do have brands like Lenovo, Asus, Toshiba, Sony and HP but those brands offer no 17" laptop with great performance in games.

If I choose Dell I9400, I would have to pay the whole refund from M3438G plus 600 euros in order to get a decent configuration. Also, I have the impression that Dell laptops aren't necessarily the best when it comes to ergonomics. And then what about Xi 1546 (is it 17-incher, by the way). Would I dare to gamble and buy another laptop from FSC after this Mx438G fiasco.

Any suggestions? I really want a desktop replacement laptop with a good video card and 17" screen. Of course there's Dell XPS2 or Alienware, but I really don't want to order online and/or pay over 2500 dollars for a notebook.

Or should I just stick with my M3438G which is stable enough to not make me lose my mind but still faulty enough that it causes me some irritation?

Hi John!

For whatever its worth, I can tell you that I have returned my notebook. FSC Norway offered me a full refund and I accepted. I too have searched for a replacement and have struggled to find it. The new xi 1546 isn’t out yet. I have found it in some web-shops in Sweden but they are very expensive there. The xi 1546 comes with a duo prosessor and the new ati x1800 GPU. I hefty machine without and doubt. But I’m not going to buy that one. I have tried FSC and got burned so I’m moving on. I have decided to go for the new dell xps 1710. It too has a duo prosessor but also packs the new NVIDIA go 7900gtx which is just about the best GPU money can buy. It also has a WUXGA 1900+1200 LCD and comes with 667 mhz memory. It truly is a monster notebook. It’s a bit more expensive then what I paid for my M4438G, but also packs considerably more power.

If you ask me – return it. No doubt about it. Good luck, John
