84.22? Don't do it!! This one crashes the system....and I'm not the only one with this problem, I think some others also reported this on this forum. I am using 84.20...with the 84.20, your benchmarks will also go up....3DM05 blows beyond 7k and 3DM06 beyond 4k.

The second optical drive was bad in my 7700 the day I got it. Thye just held some cash on my cc and sent me a drive. I am not sure they will send a onsite tech to replace the opitcal drive.

yeah sent in a support question. tried logging in and posting to support forums at alienware but 24 hours later "a moderator has not approved my post". Not sure why. Should get a response within 24 hours though.

that sounds a lot like what I am going to get...

That's like around 40 more points than my fx-57. Now I don't feel so bad about sticking with my fx57. I'm also on stock drivers too. 79.31.

Heck, when doom3 barely uses half of the system's memory and CPU, not to mention get ridiculous frame rates in ultra mode, who needs to mess with upgraded drivers yet.

This is probably the curse of the slave NEC 6750a DVD drive in systems with dual optical drive setups (check out CDFreaks - it's all described there). You shouldn't send the whole system back, just get them to replace the lower drive with another that isn't an NEC-6750a .

If I had known this back when my system first arrived I'd still have an Aurora instead of 3 RMAs and a pending refund (but that's another story).

what are they blind ????? How can any of these work. are there any there dual drive - dual layer burners (NEC 6750a DVD's) - out there functioning ? If there are not any working how can they keep offering it knowing that fact. jclyde6108, Get them to put a matshita front loader (DVD-RAM) in. Make them send it to you. That's how they got mine working.

Hey CyberP! How's your system? Still going strong? As I am still laptopless, I bet my oblivion fix from watching the "Making of" DVD that came with the collectors edition. Plus, the coin might come in handy helping me decide which model of lappie to go for now...

"Problem" solved, massive rep distributed

thanks guys. rep distributed. found out about the cdfreaks.com thing before I checked back here

Working the replacement drive issue now.
Gave them a couple of suggestions about either
1) warning about this in the configuration step
2) connecting the drive brackets so both are master on two different IDEs
3) stomping on NEC to fix this problem in the drive instead

We'll see what happens...in the mean time that means no RMA
and continued gaming til I puke!

Hey, Maxrule, you're a DIY guy....

Hmmm it takes 30 seconds to do it yourself, and if we can believe your tag line....well.....

shut off the machine
put down a nice soft towel.
put the machine on the towel upside down
take out the 4 black screws on the middle front panel.
You should see the hard drives underneath them.
In the back corner on the same side as the optical drives there is a pretty silver retaining screw. Remove it.
Use your finger to push out the top (really the bottom) drive.
Put the new drive in the same way the other one came out.
Seat it firmly.
Replace the retaining screw, the cover, and the four black screws.
Fire that hummer back up and go!
no lines, no waiting

Good CyberP! Glad to hear it I played the first part of oblivion to get the feel of it before the machine went back. Niiiiice. (the dead pixel glared like a red demon's eye the whole time though so I'm glad I sent it back)
