1st. Not sure what D.S.R is.
2nd. Mine was doing that too until I installed the nVidia Display drivers. There is also a section in the boot.ini that said /MAXMEM=256. I was thinking about removing this. What that does is limit the ammount of memory that the system sees. I figure, why not let the thing use all of it.

Woah.. good question, that should work. Then I can watch all my divx porn with it too. Going to have to give that a shot tonight.

I expect feedback from you!, I'll try it tonight.

Man, another question: Can I use GeForceTony drivers instead DELL's for the video?

Done and done...

I don't see why you can't use the GeForceTony drivers. I used the dell ones just cause you can't game on it, and didn't need all the tweeks that the better drivers could supply. I wanted to keep that partition as close to the Dell version as I could.

That might not be a bad idea.. I know it's a 1.3GB partition at the end of the drive. I believe it has about 800MB of space in-use.

I just don't know where I would stick a 800MB file for people get access to.

Let me know if you can ghost the partition. Maybe we can set up a VPN or some sort of Fileshare program. Once I get it I can definately share to other peeps for a few weeks. I have a FIOS Connection 5meg down 2meg up.

Sweet action. Downloading now. I'll be interested to see how much better the battery life is with Media Direct. Rep for Pugsly.

thanks for all you've done so far but ive encountered some problems i need help with

i used partition magic and reduced the size of my 60 gb partition by 1.5 gb. i have windows xp installed and installed media direct 2. the installation went well and i turned off the computer. i clicked the play button and i a screen pops up that says Dell Media Direct, i waited for awhile but nothing loaded. i figured after i make the changes with the partition, it would work. so i boot up into erd commander and boot into D:/. following ur instructions, i went to the boot.ini file in c:/ however you told zerowind "Thats the boot.ini from your live OS partition. The boot.ini you have to change is the one in the Media Direct 2.0 partition." His bootini looks similar to mine on the c drive. so i figured u made a mistake in ur instructions and edited the boot ini on the d drive (media direct drive) i changed that boot.ini. Then, when i went to program files, dell, there was no media direct folder, instead there was a media experience folder. however, i located the pcmservice file in that folder. i copied explorer to that folder and changed the names. after turning off my laptop, i pressed play but it gets stuck at the dell media direct screen as before. any solution?

I just downloaded the Mediadirect20.zip but I cannot extract. I tried winzip and winrar. Anyone else having this issue?

My media direct drive came up as C:\ so thats why I made reference to it. Your correct thou, it should be the boot.ini from the media direct drive.

How far does it get with the media direct screen? Do you see the gray bars scrolling acrost the screen like XP does?

There is a media direct repair download from dell on the E1705 downloads section. It is another ISO file that you can boot from on CD. When it boots you go to the MD2 directory and type repair. IT sounds like your Master boot record isn't updating.

no i dont get the grey bars, but thanks for the suggestion i will be trying it out soon
post #33 of 444
i downloaded the repair utility and i ran it. i turned off my laptop to see if media direct was now working. i clicked the play button and the media direct screen pops up, but only for a second or two, it then goes to a windows loading screen, i figured it worked, but i realized it booted regularly onto my c drive, i logged in and dell media experience opens, i am wondering why it didnt start without booting up windows. i am using media direct 2 and it should work. i am going to try re installing md2.
also here is my edited boot.ini wanted to make sure its ok
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Embedded" /fastdetect /KERNEL=NTOSBOOT.EXE /maxmem=256
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Windows XP" /fastdetect /KERNEL=NTOSKRNL.EXE /maxmem=256

let me kno if thats good

It looks good.. When you press the play button.. does it come up and ask you what OS to load? "Microsoft Windows XP Embedded" or "Windows XP".

It should load windows XP, but just the scaled down one.

Your sure you renamed explorer.exe?
no it did not ask me i am trying a re install of md2. hopefully it will now work
post #36 of 444
ok this time around, i re installed md2. when i loaded erd commander i booted into the C drive becuase my D drive is my md2 installation drive which is the opposite of yours. i changed the boot ini once again. i renamed moved exploreer and renamed it. when i tried to click the play button to boot into md2, the same thing is happening, i am loading into regular windows (with the blue loading bar) and dell media expereince is loading upon login. i am thinking it is a problem with my boot ini problem and i am not editing it properly.

quick question: When u first tried to boot up md2 before u edited the partition with erd commander, how did it boot up what exactly happened?
I don't have that problem.

Pugsly, as soon as I can rep again you'll have some rep from me

It came up with the Dell Media Direct screen, then started loading the Media Direct OS .. It said Dell Media Direct with gray bars scrolling in the middle like the XP bars do. Then it came up and said something about protected files. I clicked OK and the Media Direct was on the screen. I could play DVD's but there was no sound and the video was really chopy.

After I edited the boot.ini and tried it.. I get the black screen with an OS choice. There was a 10second timer counting down. Then I chose the OS with the NTOSKRNL kernel and it booted up and explorer started.

Just loaded the drivers and changed the boot.ini back reversed the renamed files.

Just a note.. I did NOT have the Media Direct 1.0 files loaded in my normal OS. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

When you exit out of the Media Direct that starts... Does it reboot your machine, or send you back to your desktop? Do you get sound? Can you play DVD's?
yes i do get sound and can play dvds, its as if i just turned on my computer and turned on dell media experience. after i quit it takes me to my normal desktop, i do recall installing media direct 1 a while ago. i will try to take that off and see how it works
post #40 of 444
Well... I got it all installed and configured..

Then only problem is when I boot into my regular windows, my login screen does not respond.

Have 2 users, and connot click on either of them. Just does not respond.

Anyone else have this prob?
