Dell Media Direct 2.0 ... Running on 9300/XPS M170 - Page 20

Awesome!

this is great... I got media direct to work when the PC is off... now if I could get it to work when it is on.

I have dell QuickSet but when I press MediaDirect button when in windows it just says something about how it can't load Media Experience. When I got it before I formatted it worked and came up with the same MediaDirect it comes up with at boot without turning the computer off... This would be great because I could use it like xp mediacenter.

Is there some other application I need to install into XP Home?

THANKS

Am i missing something? Whats the point?

I don't know if there is something I'm not thinking of but if I hibernate my system before I go on trips where I'd use mediadirect, whats the point other than saving 5 seconds of resuming from 256MB vs. 1GB? Is it just 'to be cool'? it seems to me it would be very inefficient because I might want to watch a DVD then work on a word document and I'd have to shut down and reboot into windows.

I don't know can anyone tell me a good use of mediadirect?
you're gonna watch a movie and work on a word processor at the same time on a plane? then load up XP.

If you just wanna watch a movie you just load media direct. Save yourself boot up time and battery power. Every bit counts in my world considering battery life is only a couple hours.

Need help in making E1405 a dual boot while keeping MediaDirect function intact

Hi all,
This forum is great. I read the previous thread messages where folks figured out a way to re-install Media-direct 2.0 on dell inspirons after deleting all original partitions.
Last week I got my new dell E1405 notebook that has media direct capability. I need to make it dual-boot with Fedora5 and XP MCE while keeping MediaDirect function intact. The notebook has currently 3 visible primary partitions (visible from windows disk mgmt):
1st: ~ 39MB dell utility (FAT)
2nd: ~87GB C: Win XP MCE (NTFS)
3rd: ~4.6 GB Windows Restore (FAT32)
and it has 1 hidden partition (I believe) of size maybe 2GB for MD2.0. (I am yet to install PartitionMagic to check the 4th one and to delete the 3rd partition to reclaim 4.6 GB and to install linux to make the notebook as dual-boot). I have experience in making desktop systems dual-boot but i am hesitating here with the thing that I might harm MD2.0 functionality. My plan was to create an extended partition by deleting the 4.6GB Windows Restore partition and adding few GBs from 2nd partition, and installing linux there without harming HPA/MD partition; but linux might not boot from a logical drive within extended partition)

Could anybody please suggests a good solution to make this system dual-boot while keeping MD2.0 function intact?

I am sure people have tried this many times before. PLEASE HELP.

Thanks in advance.

Any one got an ISO of MD 3.0. The newest version of MediaDirect.
Hopefully I will get MD3.0 in the mail tomorrow.
I ordered the CD from dell, but this is the 2nd time trying and since they didn't do it the first time, we will see if they do it this time.

If I do get it, I will make an iso and upload..... but we will see (dell is on my S**T list right now.. as I have to send my laptop in AGAIN since they didn't repair what they said they would and they removed my nice LG screen and put an aweful Samsung with horrible sparkles and light bleeding issues in instead....grrrrr)
Sorry, will let everyone know if I get MD3.0 and will upload if so.

Ok, I'm having serious problems installing MediaDirect. I have it downloaded aswell as Partition Magic. I freed up pleny of space at the end of my drive for the installation (unformmatted). But every time I run the setup for MediaDirect it initializes to 10% and then stops saying "Installation stopped due to failure when copying files. Please check your system and try again."

I've had this same error every time and I'm not sure how to solve it. Any ideas on how to fix this would be grately appreciated.

BTW, I'm running on a Inspiron 9300.

*edit* Nevermind, got it working, just needed to reboot to confirm the partition delete at the end of the drive.

Still have a problem with jittery video. Can someone provide a step-by-step guide to installing some video drivers, codecs, etc.

Bump, I still need help installing video drivers in MD 2.0.

Video Drivers

First of all.. I am very suprized how big this thread got, and thanks to all who have given me rep.

2nd on to your question
Depending on your Video card, you will need to have a copy of your driver EXE on a CD or USB drive. Once you boot into Media Direct partition you need to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and start task manager. From there you go to file/run then click on the .EXE for your video card. This will install the drivers.

Was anyone able to get an .ISO of the DMX 3.1? I would like to see how that works on my 9300/M170.

+1 Rep for you.
Umm... Do you think If i made a ghost image of the media direct off an m1210, and put it onto a D620, what do you think would happen, because there isnt a button to load it... can you load media direct by hitting a button?
Also, does M1210 come with the 2nd one you were talkign about, the one where you can search files on your computer...

Thanks.. ALOOT

*HELP*

Ok, so i chipped off 1.5gb from my live partition, so it is basically 1.5gigs of free (unformatted) space. When i put in the media direct cd, it gets to about 10% then says "Installation stopped due to failure when copying files. Please check your system and try again."

What am i doing wrong? should the free space be formatted?
Are you sure that 1.5Gb is not still contained within an extended partition? How many partitions do you have? I have found that, even if you have 1.5Gb free at the end, you may sometimes need another 1.5Gb free after your Windows partition if there are other partitions inbetween your Windows partition and the end of the drive. Note that this space will not be lost - you can reclaim it later. However, it is somes times necessary to have this space before installation will proceed.

Im kind of confused as to what you mean. This is how it shows up in partition magic:

The drive is called drive (K), its unformatted right now, but i did try and install it when i formatted it to ntfs, but i got the same error.
As you can see it is a primary.

The problem is that the empty space must be at the end of the drive. Furthermore, it must be completely empty space and not allocated to a partition at all. To fix this, delete K. Extend C into the space just created. Now shrink C by 1.5Gb at the end of the drive. Do not create a new partition in the new space. Now Media Direct will install.
