XPS stuck 800mhz?

I noticed recently that my system CPU is running at 800 mhz. It's an XPS Gen2 2.1ghz system, 2gig ram, 6800.

I have I8kfan and it is showing 800mhz. I downloaded Notebook hardware control and its showing 800mhz - yes I'm on AC. The multiplier is set at 6x currently. I tried changing the settings to Max Performance for the CPU and Battery and its still sitting at 800mhz.

I don't think I should have to turn the multiplier up to 12x to get to 2.12. Or, do I....

I have checked I8kfangui while in BF2, Eve and Oblivion and it shows the CPU running at 800mhz. So, it looks like its not ramping up when entering a game.

Any suggestions or ideas? I never really noticed this when I got the system so I can't say what it was several months back. I'm a bit confused atm.

Thanks.

control panel ==> power options ==> advanced tab ==> "always show icon in taskbar" [check it]

now, in the task bar, right-click on the power cord icon, and set it to "home/office desk"

Well, if you didn't know, Pentium M has what's called SpeedStep technology to save on power consumption, by default it's set to "maximum battery", which can be adjusted to maximum performance via Dell QuickSet, or go to screensaver on the bottom right corner there is a botton which you can go in to change the setting, once switched to maximum performance it will run at the max speed of your CPU, try that and let me know it it works

Yes, 'Maximum Performance' is the setting I use too..

my problem is the opposite of yours..mine is always stuck at full cpu speed.. tried different power settings but no dice.. task manager says cpu usage at 2%... did a reformat, was wondering if there is a download somewhere that i missed

Just to make sure I'm reading this right. I set it to home/office and I8kfangui says CPU 800 mhz as does checking system properties.

General, System properties is:
Intel Pentium M
processor 2.13GHz
799MHz 2.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

In the system bios it also reports 800mhz.

I tried to set it to max performance and loaded BF2 in both settings and no change at all. I8kfangui still showing 800mhz as was Notebook hardware control, which is off atm.

I'll play with it some more when I get home tomorrow evening.

I have the same problem even when I set the Power settings to "always on", "home/office desk", Or "Max Performance (Quickset)". When set to "Max Battery (Quickset) it'll run a 300mhz. But i'm sure the speedstep technology kicks in when you run a game. Try playing a video then check you system properties. I bet you the cpu speed goes up.

I take out the battery then my cpu speed is always above 1 gig. It's always a good idea to take out the battery when plugged in anyways. It'll extend the life of the battery.

Problem fixed. Needed to go into bios>power mgmt>speedstepping and enable it.

Called tech support and got someone from India, and it was a woman.

... and she knew the resolution.
