Why im not impressed with Alienware

First, I ordered my 51m and was told I was I receiving the following....Free Shipping...12 months Subscription to Computer Games Magazine...and $60.00 voucher to Electronics Boutiques. I checked a few times with my salesman to verify my order and to make sure I was to receive above mentioned promo's. My computer arrived nearly 3 weeks after I was told I would recieve it...which I accept because of the holiday season and all the rave reviews the 51m has been receiving.

I did not receive the $60 voucher...and all I received was a letterhead explaining they ran out of subscriptions.

I called customer service and they pretty much told me that the only thing I was going to get was the free shipping. Needless to say I was very surprised by the way this customer service I was receiving...here is a customer that has spent over $7,000 with one vendor over the last 3 years...and have reccommended this comapany to all my friends.

I continued to plead my case only on the ground of principal and had to talk to 2 different people til I talked to a "manager". He agreed that it was crazy I had to get this far to get what I was told I would be getting....I mean I had emails from their SALESMAN saying I was to receive the voucher and the magazine....I mentioned how poor it is to offer a magazine and then write a letter saying "we are sorry we ran out of magazines...so you get crap"...all they had to do was give an extra shirt or a mug...I would have been very happy with that.

Now the other reason im not impressed.....I have the ATI 9600 card and can't play any games without the RAINBOW BUG or whatever it is ruining my game experience....I am awaiting a new card to see if the one I have is damaged....but that makes me believe they never really tested the video performance....Undrestand people...this is an Alienware computer...this is the highest standard in the industry...this is the same as buying a Porsche, BMW, Mercedes....not a Chevy...If i wanted to save $1500.00 I would have bought a HP and lived with the lowend hardware...and probally have the same if not better customer service and tech support.

To all out there....be very careful before you lay down this amount of cash. I was a true alienware fan and may be still....but now I'm nervous my company which I had the upmost respect for may be just a smoke and mirrors act.

The jury is still out and I will respond if they fix these issues for me.

I am not convinced it is the gpu so much as it is the drivers...I personally have issues with the ATI card and/or the driver too...I have not heard nearly as many issues with the nvidia card...so unless the next gen ATI is amazing I am going with the nvidia 5700 or whatever the next gen (256mb) card is called...everything on my machine is beautiful except for the gaming experience...which is the reason I bought this thing otherwise I could have saved some $4000 and got an xbox, ps2, and Gamecube sheesh!

you are not suppose to get the 60 dollar voucher as you can only use one promotion

My point was that prior to commiting to the sale...the salesman confirmed 3 times that I would be receiving all the above mentioned items...He said I qualified for it...then I order...and still he confirms...then I get the computer and they say sorry! It is only a principal thing. This is Alienware. They should be willing to give what they SAY...I never expect anything less or more. But I could careless honestly about the promo...I want the issue with the gaming cleared up....I installed Omega driver too and to no avail...this is my real beef. I hope the card they send me fixes it. I wonder if i could switch to NVIDIA....or do I? Any feedback with NVIDIA?

I ordered 2nd week of December. And all of the promos were listed on their website at that time...and forgive me I might be mistaken....but I do not believe it said promo's can not be combined and even if it did...my salesman confirmed many times that I would be getting them all. But once again I want to clear up...I mostly concerned with the issue I have with my gaming experience...which is horribel right now.

First we must admit people that never have issues usually never worry about posting issues...and people who are having problems are the ones seeking help and venting on forums...I know that every single manufacture out there has issues on some of its products. So what is your reason that Alienware sux? I mean you might be lucky with your Voodoo...but then I know there are Voodoo forums with people complaining...But you may know something I don't...perhaps Voodoo has better customer service? Products? Warranty? When I shopped for my lappy..Voodoo seemed to have a limit on configurations..also their website wasn't the fastest loading...so I passed. They seemed higher priced too. I don't want to start a pissing contest, I just really want answers to my post in the tech support about colorful gaming issues.

Sorry to hear of your woes, my friend. I was happy to receive my new Area-51m within the promised 20 working days.

However, I was a bit put off as well as I had to call tech support often the first couple of days due to driver issues. That is the only complaint I have: why didn't my system arrive with the *very latest* drivers? An example of this is the ATI drivers themselves--I had older ones, and the AW tech support guy said 'you need to get the new ones.' I asked when they were released? He got quiet...and said 'a few days ago.' I checked and they were released on January 19, 2004. My computer was shipped January 26, 2004, so AW obviously did not update the drivers to the latest and the dude was lying to me! He was trying to slide away from the blame. I also had to update directX, which I shouldn't have had to do.

All in all, very happy with Alienware, and their tech support (if you're lucky enough to get Alexei, who is a *fantastic* support tech) was outstanding. Same cannot be said for a few of the other guys, who like most tech support guys don't actually listen to my educated queries but instead try to lump me in with some standard checklist, thus causing a much longer back and forth phone process before we actually got to the problem at hand. These guys need to realize that, by purchasing an Alienware, we're likely a bit more educated about computers and how they work than the typical, say, Dell customer. "Oh, you mean the 'power' was off? Silly me."

and to think how close i came to ordering the area 51 back in may....divine intervention

Let's get one thing straight...I LOVE my Area-51m...it's just that some games were freezing either due to powerstrip, driver issues, or a conflict. I have since reformatted and reinstalled my system and after some more time put into gaming I will see if the problems persist...as with anything there is bound to be a few issues...on the other hand all other aspects of this bad boy I love...performance, 16.1" beautiful screen, very little heat, not terribly noisy...all in all just a kick butt lappie! I would recommend AW to anyone and everyone that has seen my lappie has drooled...

I love almost everything about my Alienware Area-51m. Beautiful design, quiet fans, nice thin profile for what's under the hood....however, the display is where I'm conflicted. It looks fabulous, as long as you're not playing an FPS...the response time is way high (45-50ms, I've heard), so ghosting is a problem for the picky gamer (me). Otherwise, I love the big 16.1" size. Sadly, though, I'm reminded of the lightning fast 15" LCD on my old Hypersonic...it had a 30ms response and ran shooters great, and not with a single gamma or artifact problem. *sigh* (it's what I returned so that I could get an AW) I still likes my green alien lappy, though...cool blue power button light!

I hear you, toddler. I play FPS exclusively but I think the beauty of portability allows me to see beyond the response rate issue. Then again, ask me in a year after I've had the thing for awhile.

Sherrman,

I relate to your feelings. It is supposed to be the Porsche of Pc's. I had trouble from day one.

Most have been resolved, except for a partially bad pixle (always shows blue on a black or dark background). The pixle is managable. I could have it repaired, but Alienware makes a point to take thier time with repairs. And I'm in a a situation where I need this machine, so I choose to overlook the situation.

I have come to the very firm conclusion that I will never buy an Alienware PC agian.

I would have paid $200 to $300 more to have recived a properly functioning laptop.

The analogy regarding a Porche is what I was expecting, and I recieved a pain in the ass instead.

And now as I understand it they have even changed thier 0 broken pixle policy...I mean what's the point of a 200 point quality check if they can't even figure out from day one they are shipping laptops with bad pixles? Mine was not hard to spot.

I have since learned that this 200 point quality check process is done by a computer, a goofy program that is not much different than many other PC manufactures...IT IS LAME. Simply a marketing tool.

If you want a laptop, and order one from Alienware...I wish you good luck. I would be willing to bet at least 5% of the laptops they ship are crap...I feel lucky to have only one partially broken pixle.

I could go on, and on....However I won't

I did consider an Alienware desktop at one time. I know know I can build it cheaper, faster, and much more realiably than they can. And if it breaks...I've got Fry's just down the road.

I totally concur with your findings. Something is amiss in Alien sales country!
I was starting to wonder if it was just me. I still am a big fan of their hardware, but buying this nice of a machine should have been a pleasurable experience, and we got robbed of that, for sure. This was something I posted in the same vein.

Seems both the military recruiters and Alienware sales have the same honesty issue. The trick I learned before I enlisted was "if its not in writing, it never happened." Sure you can be <name of Military Occupation Specialty here>, just sign on this line and you will get MGIB, a huge bonus, and loan repayment plans. Of course if you actually read the contract you would notice many clauses and exceptions like: If you miss the orginal Basic processing date you will be placed in a MOS to be determined by critical needs such as cooks or infantry. Terms and conditions subject to change without notice. The bonus is split across 4 to 6 years (1/2 up front, 1/4 at 2 years, and 1/4 at 4 years). Loan repayment not valid for all college loans or pre-existing loans. The list goes on.

So when I hear customers complain that Alienware promised them the world, the Eiffel Tower, London Bridge, and the part ownership of upper Manhattan, I want to know where they put it in writting (ads on web sites aren't legally binding contracts). I want to see signatures in black ink only.

"Your notebook will ship in 14 days." Yeah right, and jumping out of military aircrap is fun. But drill sgt. I enlisted to be a mechanic. Well you're infantry now boy.

When you order, The Alienware Rep will send you an email to verify the order. If you ask. This goes a long way in preventing any human error. Alienware welcomes all suggestions and Comments. Just email them. It won't be intercepted or thrown away. Alienware will always be improving. There is No 100 percent perfect.
And when your system arrives, you can add the order verification email to the Alienware Black Binder. Like a baby, its proof of conception.

UPDATE:

As of February 10th....I have received my Computer Games Magazine Voucher....haven't received my $60.00 voucher for Eb Games. And finally received a new ATI card to fix my screen problems....See Colorful Screen When Gaming....in the tech support forums.

Still I feel Alienware would have been the total package except for my dealings with customer service....funny...a company can lose its customer base with poor service....FIX IT ALIENWARE
