I send the laptop, but then I'm notified that the buyer is claiming that it never arrived or its not as described. Paypal has the power to go into my bank account and take that money back even if its not there? Or if there is insufficient funds they post the negative balace on my paypal account?

Is there anyway to beat a potential scammer at his own game in this case?
They cannot take the money out of your bank account once it's in there.
You account will just be suspended and you can never use Paypal under your name forever, or until the dispute is solved.
Just use the "Print label" shipping options provided by Paypal, when they send you the payment.
Also, check if their address is confirmed, and that there is an address on their payment, if there isn't one, refund it and tell them to resend the payment.

Not true. If there is money in your bank account they can dip into it and take what they want. I know people who have had this done to them.

Solution: Always use a tracking number when sending expensive items, and get the insurance. Then you'll never have to worry about that problem.

When buying, I always ask for tracking numbers. Not everybody sends them still, but that was reason enough to get me a refund when someone didn't send me a laptop. Even though I contacted the seller using the ask the seller a question, he never replied. Left me some negative feedback but was removed.

Besides that small incident once, I've successfully purchased about 6 laptops from eBay aside from other stuff.

i got lucky so far with paypal payments and receiving (confirmed and no confirmed), my personal rules:
. get buyers to pay paypal with bank transfer (not credit cards) lower my transaction fees, especially with international buyers
. a simple 6% handling with paypal transactions when the paypal payment is credit card based
. i will not ship out any items until the $ is in my bank account, not paypal account
. only shipped with insurance

sticking to confirmed paypal accounts only blocking out many good potential buyers/sellers. For professional sellers, it is probably making sense. No payment type is safe, even with cash in hand.

cheers ...

With all these horror stories, I figured I should mention the following.

I purchased a laptop in June off of ebay. $885. I sent the money off to the seller, asking that he not ship the laptop off until the next Thursday, as I was going to be out of state on my honeymoon. He said it wasn't a problem, we communicated really well for the next 2 days. I tried sending an email on Tuesday asking that he go ahead and ship it, as I could have my neighbor pick it up for me. The email bounced.

I checked paypal to see if there was a different email address to try. Noticed that they pulled the money out of my bank account, not my credit card (putting me -723 on my wife's bank account)...but while I'm sure I said to pay with CC, I had to redo it because my credit card wasn't associated with the account yet. I could easily have messed it up when I redid it.

Days went by, and emails bounced from every account I sent from. I filed a dispute. Eventually, I filed a complaint for chargeback on the 24th. The deadline for him to respond was the 4th of July. I knew I was fairly safe, as emails bounced the entire time, I knew he wouldn't be responding. On the 5th, it was ruled in my favor, and I got all my money back. It's in my bank account now.

As others have suggested, don't trust Paypal any more than you have to, and keep the money out of there. I've been lucky over the years, but a friend of mine lost a dispute (and he deserved it too) and had his account locked for a while.

As long as you follow each guidelines Paypal has, you're safe. Of course you're gonna get screwed if you're trying to sell/buy from an unconfirmed address.

I've never had problems with Paypal. It's great.

Threads been a good read.

I haven't been active on these forums for sometime now and only came back to ask for help on my nonworking M5750. Was going to use the for sale section to unload some heat sinks, case, and HTPC parts. Was wondering what I should use for the transaction of selling the item and how I should ship it to keep it secure for me the seller and for the buyer.

Thanks for the info.

Make sure you ship products so a signature is required. This will ensure that you know when they get to their destination and who signed for them. Paypal remains a good way to process an online transaction, even though their system is tilted in favor of buyers. I've also heard good things about escrow.com, but I've never used it myself. The least risk on your part would be to demand a check or money order payment to be cashed in advance, but that creates less confidence on the buyer's side.
