7405GX /targa visionary 811a noisy fan and disassembly instructions?

Thread Starter
Hi All, I recently bought a second hand a Targa Visionary 811a, which I believe is much the same as a Gateway 7405GX.

I am a little disappointed with the fan in it. Even though I run it in presentation mode, even when it is doing nothing, the fan still kicks in every 10 minutes or so for about a minute. I use the laptop as a media centre so it stays on all the time and is quite irritating when the fan comes on when it is doing nothing.

When I am watching films it comes on about every 5 minutes or so. Considering is is only clocked at 1800mhz I find this a bit wierd!

Does anyone else have this problem?

Also as a slight side issue, has anyone been able to get any cpu temps using any software? I have tried loads, but the only temp I can ever get is from the HD. When I run Everest is says the motherboard is an ACTBIS SAM#451B.

Anyway so I thought I would clean the thermal compound from the cpu and HSF, and replace it with some arctic silver 5, as this can help keep the temps down. I took all the screws out the back and removed the HD, battery etc but I cant get anything off. Has anyone managed to get to the CPU on this thing? If so, would you be so kind as to post some instructions, and maybe even some pictures.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin

not sure how I managed to put this thread in the photo gallery, can somone move it please?

righty, then I have changed the thermal compound for some arctic silver 5 and it seems to have made no difference to the fans coming on whilst it is idle.

interestingly though, the graphics is attached to the hsf in the most amateur way! there is a thin heatpad on the core of the ati graphics, then a metal plate then a thick pad that just kind of 1/2 rests on the side of the fan!!!

I am thinking of a hardware mod so that the fan never actually turns off, it just spins slowly, but when the bios decides the fan should come on, it overrides any mod i have made. anyone any suggestions?

1. targa 811a is NOT gateway 7405gx - it is MUCH, MUCH better since it has ati9700/128MB and not ati9600/64MB cheapy - (is this a german machine ;-) ?)

2. it is noisy per "definition" :-)

3. update it with the latest amd drivers (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/..._12474,00.html) and u should be fine

cheers ...

Hi qhn, thanks for your reply.

1. Quite
2. Eh?
3. Tried this and it make no difference.

2. well, bigger and faster graphic card = more heat
more heat = fan ooooon
fan on = noisy :-)

3. u got the latest and badest from targa website on the bios and drivers?
http://www.service.targa.co.uk/

cheers ...

p.s. let me know about the 0F09, i am tempted to update my m6805 with this bios baby as well. We have the SAME arima board as u r aware of, 1/2 brothers so they say ...

Ah! I see what you mean. Interesting...... As i said before, I am amazed at how badly the ati core is attached to the HSF! I might try underclocking it, it doesnt need to be fast as I am only using it as a media centre.

Yup I have all the latest drivers.

As for the BIOS, this was the one that was on it when I bought it (2nd hand) so i cant give any insight into if it is more stable I'm afraid.

is that really that noisy? according to the targa website, if u have no clicking sound when the fan is on, then it is fine.
underclocking? man, i'd love to trade my 9600 up to the 9700 and live with the "noise" - remember u got a DTR Mobile, not a real, real laptop.
i use home/desktop power scheme, so the fan is on constantly, i hardly notice it though (and i have a 7200rpm hdd also)
someone mentioned (and tried) to put some graphite oil into the fan bearing to quiet it down - and it worked for him. I cannot say much since I have not got that far yet, but i did vacuum the heck out of the fan and the surrounding area every 6-7 months, got a bit quieter after that.
i m using mine as a media centre also - MediaPortal all the way!

cheers ...

its not *that* noisy, but because of the on/off nature of it, it becomes very noticable when it is on (bear in mind it is in the lounge). When it is on, it is definitely noisier than the desktop that it replaced. What I would like to do is have one of the fans on all the time at say 30% speed so that it turns on full power less often.

ur best shot, without messing about with the hardware is to build a good casing around a cool&quiet laptop cooler and then sit ur lappy on top of it. In one of the thread (Kaido) has some good recommendation in the cooling area. If u would ever buy one, do buy one with an external power source and not the cheapy with USB power driven, this would just make ur lappy hotter. And choose one with some GOOD fan bearings!

it really works!

SQueeZe, do you have RMClock or any other kind of CPU-throttling software installed? I have my laptop's processor set to run with automatic processor speed control, which means it runs at 800mhz unless a program needs it, in which case it boosts it all the way up to 2,000mhz as required. Fan still comes on occasionally, but that not much (maybe once or twice an hour).

hi Kaido

I dont have any specific cpu throttling software, but windows does it for me with its power options. I have downloaded the amd power monitor which shows the cpu frequency, and as you say it is normally at 800mhz unless i am doing something intensive. For this reason I would expect that if it stays at 800 mhz, the fan should never kick in.

qhn: its a good suggestion, but I dont really want to spend any more on it, and also I think that there may be a (albeit small) problem that I would like to sort out first.

Have either of you managed to get any temps from the CPU/GPU in software?
CPU/GPU temp
SpeedFan (freeware) is the closest one to give u some info on the temp of this arima board. Most benchmark utilties rely pretty much on what is being made available in the bios, and that is what our machines do not "have" :-)

FYI, I'm on the 7405GX, and nothing will give me access to MB temps. The only sensor anything can read is the HDD temp...
There is no hardware sensor that reports to a readable chip on the w730-k8 series machines. HDD temp is all you are going to get. There is obviously a temp sensor on the board (for fan control), but it is apparently analog, or segregated to the HSF itself.
