Gonna make this easy for you: PLEASE PICK A or B =)

Hoi,

i'm looking for a gaming laptop that i can bring to college. My budget is pretty low so please work with what I have:

A. Dell E1505
1.83GHz Intel DUO
1GB RAM
60gb@7200rpm harddrive
256mb Ati X1400 graphics (this any good?????)
15.4" TrueLife screen

Cost: $1150 after $600 discount

B. Lenovo T43p ThinkPad
2.13 Intel Pentium M
1.5GB RAM
60gb@7200rpm harddrive
ATI Mobility FireGL V3200 (this any good?????)
14.1 inch SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT

Cost: $1300 after $750 discount!

The primary differences are that the Dell has a 1.86DUO, 15.4" widescreen, AtiX1400 card, while the Lenovo has a 2.13IntelM, FireGLV3200 card, 14.1" screen and extra .5GB. I'm using an external monitor a lot so I don't think the 14.1" screen will be too bad... although I do prefer the 15.4"

i would go with the x1400 because if you bump it up to 2 gb of ram you can play bf2 on the lowest settings at 800 x 600 and you can play hl2....I think you would benefit with the core duo because i think in college you'll be multitasking. I say go with the dell 1505

hmm...eini mini meini mo. lol jk
go with A) Dell E1505. core duo=multitask. x1400 = decent graphics card. not to mention bigger screen.

i'll also vouch for the dell, the thinkpads are pretty vanilla in the features they offer, overpriced, and are not really designed to be gaming rigs. The x1400 isnt top of the line, but its no slouch. The firegl is more of a professional graphics card for like CAD/graphics rendering. So yea, 1505.

IBM notebooks are the best build quality notebooks on the marked. i would go with a "B" for quality, service and support.

pending on what res you get with the dell, i vote A.

Alright thanks guys :]

Looks like i will get the Dell, I'm not sure if i should pitch in the extra $60 for the 9-cell battery instead of the 6-cell, is it really that much better? Doesn't it make more sense just to buy two 6-cell batteries?

I wouldn't worry that much about the Core Duo thing, really. People say "Core Duo lets you multitask", but right now I have dozens of programs open on a 3-year-old single-core machine and the processor is running at under 10% load.

Modern processors are so amazingly fast that it takes quite a bit to bog one down. In general memory and disk are your bottlenecks, not processor speed.

if you're going to be sitting in class taking notes on the laptop and what not, it would not be an appropriate time to swap out batteries. that means you have to power down. swap batteries. power back up and then try to get the notes from your neighbor because you just missed them. lol, this is probably a bit of an exageration considering that most batteries have decent life span these days, but this is the first thing that comes to mind for me. i'd rather have a single battery that last longer. that way, you also dont have to worry about carrying around a spare. JMHO.

If you're going to be carrying your laptop around a lot to classes, I find a 15.4 screen is a little bit big. but then again, I wouldn't go with a firegl card for gaming.

It might be good to rethink your decision. The Dell certainly has better graphics, the one on the IBM would be approximately equivalent to Radeo 9200 in performance. But in a couple of years, both laptops will be seriously behind times, but you will be a lot less likely to run into long term problem with the IBM than with the Dell; which is more flashy but not a good choice for long term investment.

The x1400 is better then a V3200. I was working with a desktop with a V3200 and it wasn't very good. I also tried a x300 hypermemory in the same unit and it wasn't any difference.

Yeah good point.

I got the Dell1505 but now I just found out I could get it w/ a DVD burner, 2GHz processor and a 9-cell battery for $170 more I wonder if dell will exchange it? Is it even worth it? thanks.
