Kubuntu Help - Noob question

Thread Starter
Hi. Just got kubuntu-6.06-beta-live-i386.iso

I have Asus Z71V Nvidia Go6600 2Ghz laptop

1) My video card fan is going wild - full speed as if it is Half Life 2- I guess Kubuntu has no video card power management? Or how can this be fixed?

2) Um, does it support WPA wireless encryption?

3)If 2 above do not work, maybe Ubuntu latest beta does all of that? And is Ubuntu better - faster, easier?

Please go easy, I am a noob.

Thanx.

Now there is anotehr problem:

1) Kubuntu does not want to install, it asks me questions up to 6 when I choose my name and login name and password and that is it, nothing happens. The install does not install

2) I get a message every 40 seconds: NDisplay CHanged: LCD ON it blips for 1 second and dissapears.

Man, I gues there is nothing better then windows at the moment, that simply works

1: I'm assuming you already installed the nvidia drivers? AFAIK, it's in the official drivers, mebbe not the ones that can be retrieved through apt.

2: Yes, but IIRC it's kinda difficult in Breezy. I've never done it, check out ubuntuforums for a howto.

3: Ubuntu boots faster than Windows on most of my machines. I'm not gonna lie - Linux has a learning curve. However, this learning curve is really no different than moving from Windows to Mac OS or vice versa, or even Mac OS to Linux. You just really need to be willing to put time into it. Your best tools for learning are Google and the forums for the distro, in this case UbuntuForums.

As for Dapper, I haven't used it yet: my boxen are all production machines--not safe for betas.

1: Check the other virtual terminals (alt+f2 - f4) and see if there are any distinct error messages. If none, verify the md5 hash of the iso you downloaded --make sure it matches the one they've got on their site. If you need an md5 hasher for Windows, PM me.

2: Where does the message appear? Is it on a terminal? Is it on the screen's OSD?

if you're trying to use espresso to install, dont bother, get an actual install cd, not a live cd. espresso kept crashing for me all the freaken time after like 5 tries in about the same place as you said, the real install cd went just fine and dandy.

i wont lie, your lappy has a not very friendly lappy history, but its doable.

make sure to install the nvidia drivers (open synaptic and search for nvidia, download appropriate packages), they are official drivers, latest release i believe (i know the latest official ati release became available this morning on ubuntu sources). don't forget to edit your drivers in xorg.conf from "nv" to "nvidia" and then reboot and hope to god it works (it should, run glxgears to confirm).

in my prefferance, Ubuntu > Xubuntu > Edubuntu > Ubuntu Server > Kubuntu. Its not that i dont like KDE, the mandrake install on my desktop is KDE, and when i had PClinuxOS KDE was great on it, but kubuntu just sucks that much more, and i won't lie, i do prefer the gnome desktop.

I gave up on it, too much toruble for a noob.

Either PClinuxOS 0.93 will save me or I am doomed by Windows.
is the full version of .93 out yet?
I don't know about the full .93 but minime is just as good. Also FoxLinux (don't flame ,Fedora based but WORKS!) is sweet ! (My new desktop on my desktop) Gateway GT 5032 and my M6811 is running Myah OS (slack based). PCLinux has now got some close competion as my favorite (easy for semi noob).
