Conexant 56k modem?

Does anyone use their modem? Anyone else have problems ? I've got a M6809 eMachines with XP, and have never had any problem with the ethernet or wireless.l
However, I wanted to use the dialup service my DSL also provides to send a fax every once in a while. The conexant modem is shown to have the proper drivers, Windows says it's enabled, but I can't query it, and can't connect out.
Even when disabling the video ( which shares irq22), Windows gives me an error code error 000005aa.
I upgraded the Via chipset drivers, but I'm pretty sure it's a conexant issue.
Unfortunately, there's no PCI device tweaking in the tinkertoy bios that comes with these eMachines laptops. That's the only criticism I have of these otherwise awesome laptops.
I'm guessing Arima does the actual bios lockdown, and then eMachines or Gateway put their logos on.

In Windows XP IRQ's are normally shared all the time. So this isn't a problem. Make sure Windows XP SP2 is installed. THen remove the conexant drivers and install the SmartLink drivers. This should solve your problem.

Yes, I know about IRQ-sharing. Convenient that the Realtek audio and the modem, which is also by Realtek, share IRQ 22. I'm guessing they are a single piece bonded together on the board.
I think XP's SP2 is what broke the drivers. I've seen other forums with similar issues with different brands of laptops all getting the same problem, all with SP2. but I'll definitely check out that link.
thanks-

p.s.- you wouldn't happen to be an assembly programmer or know of any versions of this bios that are unlocked? If you are or do,
