Anyone heard anything new on the release date for the new Windows OS, opinions please on how much of a difference it will make, if you were getting a new Dell would you wait for it to come out, etc, etc?????

Deffinatley wouldn't bother waiting. Its coming out after december 06, and even then im not upgrading because it doesn't even add that much to xp.

negatory on the release date. code re-write is pushing it back past christmas. however, for someone buying a dell, it is possible [according to this article] that you could get it around christmas '06. this fark-up is because of a 60% code re-write [article here]

I'm pretty sure the code rewrite was proved to be a rumour.

As far as Vista goes, as I understand it, the Q1 2007 thing is only for buying it off of store shelves. It will be released to manufacturers as an OEM (for installation/sale with new computers) before then. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Still there's going to be bugs and driver issues like when XP came out. I like to let OS mature a little before putting them on my machines.

Incorrect. DirectX 10 will have a massive positive effect on gaming.

As per Gamespot "DirectX 10 will increase game performance by as much as six to eight times. Much of that will be accomplished with smarter resource management, improving API and driver efficiencies, and moving more work from the CPU to the GPU."

these hypotheticals are completely meaningless. the proof will be after the systems with vista come on line and benchmarks are taken.

as far as waiting, well you could, or you could just get a system that will be vista compliant.

it's not going to be huge initially though, because the majority of people aren't going to have dx10 cards when it's released. As people upgrade their hardware, then it will become more mainstream. Everygame will still have a dx9 option.

I agree that is it too early to tell percisely the effect but there is every indication that DirectX 10 in Vista will have a major impact on the gaming community.

All these people are talking about getting vista right when it comes out. Doesnt anyone remeber what happened with ME edition. It flopped and was probably the worst operating system ever. How do you know Vista isnt going to be a repeat?

There is a huge difference. ME was the last incarnation of Windows based on the 9x code base (and thus it likely contained substantial DOS era components that were ready for retirement). W2K and XP were based on an NT code base and as such were much more stable then ME. NT was designed from the ground up as a more stable, robust, and secure operating system for business use. With ME being the end of the line for the 9x code base there was less incentive for Microsoft to continue to invest heavily in ME once it was released.

Before XP came out in 2001, OEM's were offering free upgrades to XP when released for 3-5 months BEFORE XP released if you bought a computer today. They mailed out the CD's and you could do the upgrade.

I guarantee Dell will do the same thing this time; I'd expect it to start in August.

Otherwise I wouldn't wait.
