auto-downclock?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

have any of you run into a situation where your laptop downclocks components such as the video card, processor, or other things when on battery mode? but reemerges to max when plugged into an AC?

if so, is there any way I can edit this feature? (and how would i do so.)

and oh, if someone here has experience with Omega ATI drivers, can you tell me why its better than the Catalyst drivers (to me, catalyst seemed much more user friendly.)

thanks in advance

All laptops downclock things like the processor and the GPU when there's no need for all that power. Processors are so sickeningly fast right now that you only need a tiny fraction of your processor's power most of the time: downclocking doesn't hurt performance (since if you need the power, the machine upclocks again) and saves power, extending battery life and reducing heat output and fan noise. This sort of thing has actually been in *desktop* computers for quite a while now -- it's included with AMD's Athlon 64 chips under the name Cool and Quiet.

Programs like SpeedswitchXP and RMClock let you tinker with the machine's processor scaling behavior.
