Alienware memory flash drive 1G

Hey everyone,

When I recently bought my ALX 5.1 speakers, I also ordered an Alienware® USB 2.0 1GB Flash Drive. Here are the specs:

Alienware® USB 2.0 1GB Flash Drive
The Alienware™ USB 2.0 Flash Drives are the ideal complement to any Alienware system. With the fast USB 2.0 interface, they offer high-speed data transfer (up to 480Mb/second) and a write-protection switch to prevent accidental data loss. Plus, they're bootable, meaning that they're the perfect replacement for legacy floppy disk drives. The bright LED activity indicator, Space Black rubberized finish and Alienware logo are the finishing touches that make it a must have product.

Fast File Transfers
Get up to 480Mb a second transfer rate when used on a USB 2.0 port (transfer rate lower on USB 1.1 systems).

LED Activity Indicator
Check for proper port function and drive activity with an easy to see red LED.

Included Accessories
Includes convenient neck strap, keychain ring, USB cable and mini-CD with utility software and drivers for Windows 98 systems.

Specifications

Connection - USB2.0 / 1.1
Capacity - 1GB
Bootable - Yes
Data Transfer Rate - Up to 480Mb/second (requires USB 2.0 port)
LED Activity Indicator - Red
Included Accessories - USB Cable, Neck Strap, Keychain ring, protective cover, shirt clip

Well, there's not much to add...

You simply pop off the lid to expose the USB connector, and insert it into any available USB port on your system. The first time I plugged it into one of the front usb ports in my desktop, the red led on the drive lit up, and a screen popped up asking me if I wanted to synchronize the drive automatically or manually. If I understand it right, synchronizing let's you keep files between more than one computer up to date automatically.

After choosing whether to sync manually or automatically, the drive shows up in your "My Computer" screen as another drive. In my case it's drive M. You can now drag and drop, open, delete files and anything just like it's an additional drive on your computer. You can then plug it into another computer and do the same. I figure I'll be using this mostly for transferring data to other computers that aren't on my network, for instance if I don't want to plug my laptop into the network and just want to transfer something I'm working on, or mp3's that kind of thing. I got the 1G size as I've got a 128m one that is convenient, but isn't big enough to transfer a whole cd's worth of info or image.

Here's a picture of the heavy zip-loc bag and it's contents as it arrives from Alienware.

Here's the contents of the bag. It's a neck strap with quick release connector, a USB cable if your USB ports are in an inconvenient location like the back of your machine. The cable allows you to leave it in place and be able to plug in the drive without having to get to the back of your machine. There is also a driver mini-disc it you still use Win98 or similar old OS's that don't have the drivers built in as in the case of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. And there is the drive itself.

This is a close up of the drive itself, showing the rubberized finish, the cap with shirt clip, the keychain loop, and the write protection switch on the side. This will let you copy data from the drive without accidentally altering or deleting it in the process.

This is the drive with the cap off, and a reminder to myself that I should wipe the fingerprints off chromed pieces before taking pictures with a digital camera.

This is a closeup of the write protection switch.

Since this review is so short, I decided to take some pictures of my Alienware kitsch collection.

In this picture, clockwise from upper left, you'll see:

An Alienware tumbler with the handle.

A rubber foam Alienware can or bottle insulator, in this case with a big Guiness can inside.

An Alienware white visor.

An Alienware tumbler without a handle.

An Alienware ceramic mug.

An Alienware led blue flashlight keychain.

An Alienware pen with rubberized grip.

An Alienware metal teardrop shaped keychain (thanks AlienRichard)

In the center is my Fossil Alienware limited edition collectors watch, and the box it came in.

I have the 512mb. It is sweet, but they are pretty expensive.

I have the 256mb version. Last month I left it in the pocket of my jacket and washed it in the washer. Still working good as new! Kudos to Alienware! Got my heart set on the 4gb version.
