Driver without "background noise" - Page 7

To be honest, I haven't read any negative review before I bought it... All the reviewers were praising 8204 and I was even more angry when I finally bought it and I could find so many issues out of the box... I'm still getting negative reps for my old posts because some people hate to hear about problems that notebook they choose has/had... They just prefer to keep their eyes shut and be happy that their notebook is capable to play WOW... I'm happy to see that this problem is getting louder now - maybe we'll nail down Acer to find the solution in the end...

Yes, I really hope this gets to the surface. Big time.

Have people not discovered that it isn't SOLELY an Acer problem? It has been discussed in this very thread. It is also an Asus issue, on more than one of their machines, both the W3J and the S96/Z96 series.

All 4 of these laptops have the x1600, and perhaps, Asus mobo's. So it seems it is probably an issue from outside Acer, may be an issue with the x1600 in laptops in general

hmm, anyone can confirm macbook pro also has this problem?

it seems we have to contact ATI then.

Yes Tay,

It is even on the iMacs (or whatever the apple computers are called now) with the x1600. Surprisingly, even the high quality, mucho expensivo laptops have the problem. So it's definitely related to the x1600.

It just freaks me out that I've read so many good reviews about the 5672 and no one mentioned the problem. How could they have not noticed, they’re professionals! It leads me to believe that if you don't change any of the Laptops drivers/OS, it won't have the problem. But I could have sworn I saw the problem the first time I turned it on; before I reformatted.

The good news is my refund has been approved by CDW and by Monday/Tuesday I'll have all my money back.

I'm thinking of just neglecting graphics altogether and buying a budget laptop. Those Core Solo based Celerons are pretty neat IMO. Built on 65nm process, they are a Core Solo with 1 MB of cache instead of 2. You can find a whole variety of laptops with them for under 600.
Any recommendations?
I was thinking a compaq Presario.

Why not get a x1400 5672 with 2GB ram.
Might be less money since the Merom machines are coming soon.
I honestly am not having any problems with my graphics.
I don't think I am the exception.
A handfull of people having problems with a mass produced device
produced by the thousands is not a valid indictment of a product line.
I wouldn't trade my machine in for anything else, except maybe
one of the new Alienware Area51 5500's with Duo Core.

So who do you think is responsible to find the solution with Acer notebooks? Users?!?
someone (not me cause im too lazy lol) should post about this on rage3d.com

some of the ATI driver makers post there, and might get some more input from their end that way

I was thinking about that, but I mean, I have done nothing wrong with my ACER product, I merely received it and reinstalled windows on it. ACER / ATI are the ones with the production problem, not me . And yes, I was actually thinking about getting the version with the 100gig hdd and x1400, that is IF I can manage to get a refund.

That is a good point Jaad. What i was getting at is that i dont think Acer will do jack, as would any other manufacturer. I think we would have to shoot at ATI specifically

I reported this problem to ATI about 2 months ago... No answer so far...

I bought a Toshiba Sat A105-S4054 at CompUSA for $850. I'll be receiving $250 back from their mail-in rebate.
I think it's a pretty good deal.
Dou you guys have any experience with Toshiba?

You probably won't like the Intel integrated graphics. I think it uses system memory. Doesn't have any of it's own. It look like it "shares" 128 MB of your 512 MB. Don't leave much for mundane tasks like running the installed XP MediaCenter. With the money you saved get more memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145012 for $168.00 you can get 2 GB of the Corsair Value Select above. A bigger HD would be nice. These are things I would do or have done. I bought the above 2 GB of PC-5300 ram to replace the 2 GB PC-4200 that my 5672 came with. I wanted ram that matched the frontside bus. My 5672 came with 120 GB Seagate Momentus 5400 the largest 5400 rpm HDD curently available. I will be getting a Seagate 160 GB Hybrid when it becomes available as well as replacing my Yonah proc with a 2.0 GHz Merom proc. I already have the BIOS update needed. If your feeling real adventurous buy a Yonah Core Duo proc and swap out the Core Solo. I think Yonahs will drop in price when Merom's hit the streets. If they haven't already. Don't know if user upgrade of processor is possible like the 5672 but it would make a difference in performance. Might need a BIOS update at same time. It would probably void warranty nevertheless. Just a thought. Looks like you have a very similar spec'd optical drive to the 5672. Same model? Not too much bloatware either. I bet you don't have an install disc though. Most makers don't include one nowdays. You will probably have a hidden partition like the Acer's with all your restore/install data there. Sounds like you have a decent notebook for your money. Good Luck. Too bad you and the others are/were having problems with 5672 x1600 machines. I'm beginning to like my 5672 x1400 more and more. Then again I don't game so I don't know what I'm missing.

I can do Blender on my laptop! It gets choppy after 24000 verts, but I never edit that many at a time anyway. With the way I use layers and vertex hidding, it probably wont be much of a problem.
I'm so freaking happy. I didn't expect the GMA 950 to be able to handle it. I guess the Core Solo is helping out a lot.

The Core procs are the future of PC and now Apple computing.

Please don't deviate from the topic. This is one of the better threads about x1600/TM8200 background noise. We might even find a solution one day.

I'm sure there is a solution. LCD's are mature technology as is video rendering tech. It is unrealistic for us to simply accept flaws such as this as some folks have suggested. I can't believe that all examples of TM8200's and AS5672's with x1600 are bad on the other hand. Any way since I have a 5672 with x1400 and no problems with it, I think I will refrain from any further comment here. I will keep an eye on this thread though. Hope it works out for everybody.

In case anyone is still wondering if this is only an Acer problem, it's not. I have the same issue in the ASUS S96J, and we have a big thread going on it on notebookreview.com We call it 'graininess'.

Someone took off the LCD and put it on another laptop and it didn't have the issue. Someone else claimed they got rid of it with an old Omega driver. I've put in a ticket with ATI. Hopefully they'll respond.

ATI's response was:

Greetings!

ATI does not provide direct technical support for laptops/notebooks at this current time (telephone or email). If you require direct technical support please contact the system manufacturer of your laptop/notebook.
