Driver without "background noise" - Page 8

Could you give me ATI email address.

I want to send same query, and I hope all of us send the same thing.
It will open Their eyes

I received an SMS from the Acer repair center that said my laptop (5672) is now repaired and has been sent back. It also said that I should expect the delivery from UPS in 2 work days.

This will be exciting, because if the HAVE in fact fixed the graininess I would really like to know what they did to get rid of it.

I registered on the support section of their website and created a ticket.

Hello Everyone,

Like Krista I have a S96j with the graininess. While it is difficult for me to see it and does not really bother me I would like to resolve it.

One important factor that I would like to point out is that I do not see the graininess when in Vista (Beta 2). I have Vista on a second partition. It is definately not there.

This really leads me to believe that this is driver, software, or OS related.

What do you think? Anyone else here running the Vista beta on their X1600 based notebook?
Ok, here are photos comparing my S96j with same background with winXP and Vista Beta 2. Obviously these should be viewed on screen without problem. By the way, I checked and I see no graininess while in my bios.

Windows XP Pro:

Windows Vista Beta 2:

Any "grain" seen in Vista shot is just stuff on screen.

It's a different shade, so it doesn't say anything - check the Nokia Monitor Test (brightness&contrast), then we'll know for sure...
It was not a different shade. It probably was at a different angle. I tried tripod and it was not working (lots of wavy lines) so I upped the ISO and shot by hand. I chose the same desktop color in both windows xp and vista. This color clearly shows the graininess in XP. I went into display properties > desktop and choose "none". Then clicked on "color" and then "other". The color I chose in both XP and Vista was the darkest green (5th row, 4th color from left).

I just found a few colors in Vista that that have the graininess anyway so there goes that theory For some reason there are a lot more colors in XP where the graininess is apparent than in Vista. In Vista it is pretty much only the medium grays (and one blue/gray).

jaad75,

Do you still have the problem? Earlier in the thread you said that after a clean install fixed the problem. Are you still without problem?

Thanks for the very nice pictures flipcody.

Well I switched HDDs with another TM8200 which has no screen issues with no effect, my TM8200 still has speckles while the one who hadn't still has not so 100% sure it is not a driver or software issue except probably for firmware.

Maybe it can be solved through firmware, drivers or something but from what I tested a clean installation will not solve it.

@flipcody,
Earlier in this thread (April 2006), I didn't notice that OS reinstallation resolved only "HQ Overlay Mode" noise problem, related to Omega 6.3 drivers... Since then, we know that the noise is still there but it's not that easy to notice as before. Whole "background noise" story started when someone found a website, where the background should be solid and 8204 displayed that shade with a grain/noise. Then screen tests showed that notebook simply cannot display some colors/shades properly. It is not as annoying as "HQ Overlay Mode" noise, but still unacceptable if you do anything related to graphic design/photography.

Just a thought. Is the Intel integrated graphics still on the chipset?
Could the x1600 be interacting with it, causing the problem observed?
Food for thought?
as far as I know, it's a different version of chipset...

Well, I just received my 5672 laptop back from "repairs". When I sent away the laptop I put together a document describing the problem with the pixels and how to easily check it. All Acer did was change the LCD, and well, the problem still remains, as expected.

I'm too tired of this problem and do not have the time to keep bitching about it because I really need my computer for studies from now on. I will sit tight and wait for a sofware fix for the problem. It is a problem, but it is not THAT big of a problem, the computer still does its job. Nonetheless it is a bit irritating...

And now my two left USB ports are not working. Is this a common problem?

**** this, I do NOT feel like sending in my laptop again just because Acer messed up my USB ports.
Well my 8202 came back exactly like yours except for the fault: my USB ports work well but now my notebook turns off all of a sudden sometimes.

I will send it back but first I have to get used to waiting another two weeks to use it again.

That's a huge difference. I don't know how that graininess on the first image doesn't bother you! Krista

ASUS has come out with a VGA BIOS update that fixes the grainy color problem on the S96J (currently in beta). In other words, it's Possible! We got a reseller to contact ASUS for us and get it through the channels. Something similar will probably need to be done for ACER

I got the same response - it's totally ridiculous, ATI really needs to get their act together on notebooks... it's not like every notebook manufacturer is using a totally different mainboard / bios - to the contrary.

ATI suggested that I contact Acer support for a problem I have with the driver, which is that textures over 2000x2000 pixels display as white rectangles. Yeah, right - that's obviously something deep down in the driver, how is Acer going to know about this?

I have sworn to myself to only buy NVidia cards from now on.

ASUS found the solution.
It's BIOS VGA
now we must push acer to do something

Any luck on this? I love my ASUS S96J now that the graininess has been fixed. I want my sister to have the same experience on her Acer.
